Fall 2016
 World Breastfeeding Week 2016

The #WBW16 theme "Breastfeeding: A Key to Sustainable Development" reminds us that breastfeeding affects more than just the mother-child dyad; societies, the communities where we live, and the world at large are affected when breastfeeding isn't sustainable.

Breastfeeding affects maternal health, child health and survival, poverty reduction, women's productivity, and so many other vital factors. Mother-to-mother support is key to promoting the success of breastfeeding worldwide. By strengthening the bonds between women and mothers locally and around the world, we ALL benefit!

Join Breastfeeding USA as we empower mothers across the country to gain evidence-based information which will support them in meeting their breastfeeding goals.

Breastfeeding USA at the
International Babywearing Conference 2016

On July 14-17, several of our Breastfeeding Counselors represented Breastfeeding USA at the International Babywearing Conference in Atlanta, GA. Present were Meredith Sinclair, Zonna Franklin, Ginger Gorrell, and Melissa Cline (not pictured).

The conference brought together more than 700 enthusiasts, educators, manufacturers, retailers, medical professionals, and more, according to babywearinginternational.org.  Many mothers report babywearing as a practice that helped along the way in their breastfeeding journey, and it was wonderful to see so many little ones comfortably nursing while being worn.  If you would like to see how to safely wear your nursling, check out a short instructional video by our own Meredith Sinclair in this Winter 2015 Newsletter!

Can I Breastfeed While I am Ill?

Summer is often a time of good health and well-being, but as soon as the days begin to shorten and kids return to school, the sickies invade our homes once again.

Cold, flu, tummy bugs, and all of the viruses which didn’t plague us during the sunny summer months rear their ugly heads again.

How do you handle common contagious illnesses if you are breastfeeding?

This article will provide the answers you need about nursing while under the weather.

Laid Back Breastfeeding:
Easy  Steps to a Comfortable Latch

One of our favorite breastfeeding experts is Nancy Mohrbacher, IBCLC, FILCA. Her books, texts, apps, and YouTube videos have helped countless mothers gain confidence and problem-solve breastfeeding questions.

One common tweak to try if you are experiencing uncomplicated latch issues is a change in position to a more natural and relaxed position, often called "laid back breastfeeding". This position facilitates a deeper latch, helps your baby to use her feeding instincts unencumbered, and allows you to relax. Nancy shared an article describing this helpful option with us, and has two excellent videos here and here so that you can visualize this position if you are unfamiliar with it.
Breastfeeding USA Volunteer of the Quarter

Congratulations! It is with much excitement that we announce the volunteer of the quarter for Breastfeeding USA: Kate Nadeau!

Kate has been a member of Breastfeeding USA since early 2012, and she became accredited as a Breastfeeding Counselor in May 2013, starting the first chapter in Massachusetts. She now operates the Greater Western MA Chapter with Rachael Lawrence Fisher.

Kate began volunteering with the National Organization in September 2013, as an interviewer with the Applications Team. Kate became co-manager of the Applications Team in 2014; in March 2015 she became the sole manager of the Applications Team when her fellow co-manager, Ashley Price retired from the position. In the last year, the applications team and process have undergone many changes necessary in a growing national organization, including revamping the recommendation forms and processes as well as updating the application. Kate has been invaluable in making these important changes! Applications is the doorway to our organization for potential BCs. Kate manages her workgroup with energy and dedication that we could not do without!

Kate makes her home in western MA with her husband and their three sons, ages two, five, and 12. Kate is employed as the marketing manager for an industrial automation firm, although she is provided the luxury of working from home half the time. Kate is active in a number of local mothering groups in her community and her church, where she volunteers her time as well. She was previously her oldest son's cub scout leader and is looking forward to taking on that role again as her other sons get older.

Please join us as we recognize and thank Kate for her continued efforts to promote the growth of Breastfeeding USA.
