Ohio State boss Smith with a long Q&A for the Toledo Blade's Briggs, starts with thoughts on the coming beer sales in Ohio Stadium, "It is a changing landscape. There’s been a major shift. I never thought Texas would [sell beer]. I never thought we’d be here. I really didn’t, because most of those other schools do it for the money. We will benefit financially, no question. but the main thing was providing service." "Bothered" by satellite FB camps & says it's not just about Michigan's executions, on Wolverines HC Harbaugh's tweet directed right at him, "Stuff like that happens. It rubs off me, man. I’ve been around too long." Points to his friendship & respect for UM AD Manuel as one reason he refuses to get involved in a back & forth, but also points to simply taking the high road. Believes what people forget is that Harbaugh can really coach. Lots more, including not being quite sure where the rest of the Big Ten TV deal ends up, the complicated dynamics of transfers in MBB & his thinking that Stanford could be caught one day at the top of the Learfield Directors' Cup standings. - link
The News & Observer's Jacobs digs in on Knight Commission Executive Director Perko, admits there are times her group has felt like the Greek king Sisyphus who was tasked with pushing a boulder uphill, only to see it commonly roll back down, "...but there have been enough successes to know that the work can make a difference. In significant ways on the academic side we have made a difference." After detailing Perko's background, thoughts on the 'new realities' in the industry, "The big elephant in the room now with reform, particularly around the financial issues, is that the NCAA really does not control football. The fact there’s now this football championship that generates nearly as much money as the basketball tournament distributes back to Division I schools is a very new reality, and all that money sits outside the NCAA management process." A bit more. - link
High-profile FB HCs who double as youth coaches for their kids: Clemson's Swinney, Northwestern's Fitzgerald, Western Kentucky's Brohm & Temple's Rhule. The Post & Courier followed Swinney during a game coaching his son Clay's 12U baseball team, the Orange Crush. On this day, Swinney squeezed in two games around a donor event the night before & then flying to Myrtle Beach afterward for ACC meetings. Swinney tries to keep weekends open during spring practice for his own family & for the sake of his student-athletes. Swinney: "Whether you’re coaching college kids or 12-year-olds, it’s still competing and teaching and trying to get young people to grow from where they are and help them to improve. That’s the same deal." - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
If you listened to a recent 1.Question interview with the Portland Business Journal's Kish, you know that apparel deals in Europe for the major players matter in the overall pot of money they have to spend on partnerships & Adidas will reportedly ante up €50M ($56.64M as of right now) annually to keep its marks & swag on the German national soccer team. The new amount is double what Three Stripes currently pays & the new pact is said to run through 2019. - link

TCU surged late to beat Texas Tech in Omaha yesterday afternoon & within the game recap D1Baseball.com's Etheridge penned a sidebar on conference rematches at the CWS. Coincidentally, the pair also met in an opening round match-up in 2014 with the same result, a Horned Frogs win. "Over the last 10 years [since] 2007, there have 14 rematches between teams from the same conference in the College World Series. Surprisingly, the teams that won the regular-season series are just 6-8 in those rematches in Omaha. No team that won a conference series has beaten that same club in the CWS since Arkansas beat South Carolina in 2012." - link
Additional Baseball notes: Ear-to-the-ground Skippers Dugout is reporting Youngstown State will hire Mercyhurst North East (NJCAA) HC Bertolini as its new HC (NJCAA) (link); If you haven't followed the Texas search in the last couple of days, it sounds like Tulane's Pierce & Houston's Whitting are the latest candidates to interview for the Longhorns top leadership role on the diamond. The Houston Chronicle reports Whitting's pay for the Cougars at $300K annually, tops in the AAC (link, link).
Kansas State FB HC Snyder on his Twitter presence that's averaging three tweets per day, "If I am going to do it, I am going to do it myself. It is kind of like writing notes or responding to e-mail. It is easy to get somebody else to do it, but, to me, that is not the right way." Says he's learning how to include pictures, which he calls a bit "tedious." Recently added in retweeting his program's main FB account, doesn't expect to follow many more than the current 13 he has on the list. Good little read on getting a 76 year-old up to speed on social media. - link
Ohio continues to work toward a new student-athlete academic center at Peden Stadium with the next step of asking the Board to approve $620K for designs. The facility has been budgeted to cost $6.165M & already counts a lead gift of $2.25M, but there's been some push-back on campus. The Bobcats have a majority of the total pledged & plan to pay the university back on a loan for the project as pledges become cash. AD Schaus & Prez McDavis on the same page on the need for the new digs, a bit more. - link
In the wake of the less-than-ideal per-school payout from C-USA's TV contract, Charleston Gazette-Mail's Smock opines about whether or not "creative" realignment could land Marshall back in the MAC, given that schools in the Herd's former league received more than 3x the media right money MU did. Smock excoriates anyone who claims they didn't want out when the initial move was made and believes exit/entry fees and other money issues could be prohibitive, while acknowledging that bad will likely wouldn't be a mitigating factor (lots of turnover in leadership at the school/league office level) and offering that best bet is waiting for the AAC to come calling if it gets raided by the Big 12. - link
Harvard Business Review: "6 Ways to Disagree with Senior Management." Career Strategies Prez Claman details: 1) Don’t just blurt out your point of view; be strategic about it. Think it through.; 2) Make sure you’re right; 3) Bounce your point of view off of a few trusted peers; 4) Prepare a presentation; 5) Find a respected, credible expert to go over your conclusions; and, 6) Find someone you know who is the same rank as the more senior person you are trying to convince. - link
Technology Today presented by Paciolan, Now Spectra, Ticketing & Fan Engagement
You may have seen this commercial during the NBA Finals Game 7 last night & it caught my eye as Under Armour boss Plank communicated in pretty efficient terms why his company is betting so heavily on technology. "Using technology is a critical differentiator. Changing the expectations of a consumer about what a sports brand should be for them." It's a co-branded spot highlighting UA's partnership with SAP & the concept of using "live data" to advance the company as it can anticipate customer needs & wants. - link

Missed early last week, Omaha World-Herald's Shatel wrote on Nebraska FB's home sellout streak in the microcosm of one season ticket holder who gave up seats that had been in his family for over 80 years when told he'd have to pay $2,500 per seat to keep them. Shatel continued by gathering comments from a number of those who have chosen not to renew and/or purchase season tix & the reasons range from rising costs to comfort & convenience coming first to the impact of modern technology on the viewing experience. - link
Disney/ESPN: Shanghai Disney, at a cost of $5.5B, is open as the company's first foray into the Chinese theme park market. Chinese Prez Jinping at official opening ceremonies last Thursday, "I hope that Shanghai Disney can provide visitors with safe and premium experiences and become a world-class theme park. I hope it promotes exchanges across cultures of the world." Overall, it's a huge bet by Disney, as noted by boss Iger, "It's a big bet on a big market and it represents not only our biggest entrance into this market but the potential to deliver great growth for the company long term." China's tourism industry produces a massive $610B annually. (link); Cynopsis Sports caught up with ESPN founder Rasmussen prior to honoring his legacy later in the week. Rasmussen on current critics of ESPN, "I think everybody should be tested. Some are potshots because of whatever their personal relationships are with the company. But I think that anybody who is a leader should always be questioned. If somebody has legitimate questions about why ESPN is doing this or that, I think they should ask that question. If it is troublesome for ESPN, then I think they have a problem. But they’ve handled it all pretty well over the years, there have been some incidents that come up that I think they would handle differently today, but that’s business." More (link).
An update on alcohol being sold at the CWS for the first time. The first link & article says beer is priced at $6 & $7 with wine at $8 & $9, but the second link, a tweeted picture from ESPN's Rovell, has the price points of $5 & $10, respectively. Concessionaire Levy Restaurants has said they expect to move 400 units per 1,000 fans during the tourney. Overall, $1M of new revenue could be produced. Local bar owners aren't too worried about the addition cutting into their sales. - link, link
Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, home of the College FB Playoff National Championship for the upcoming season, has started to install new video boards. Part of $100M in overall upgrades by the Tampa Bay Bucs that will also benefit USF. Bucs COO Ford: "The game-day experience is going to be unbelievable. You think about what fans have experienced. Raymond James Stadium, I feel, is the crown jewel of the NFL, but you go from having 2,400-foot scoreboards to 9,600." - link
Around Higher Ed: Notable political media voice Will has been pushing one individual lately who he believes should be the next President of the United States & it's pretty interesting considering the individual is in the process of hiring a new AD: Purdue Prez Daniels (link); New Wyoming Prez Nichols has declared a state of financial exigency for the university, meaning the dollars & cents in Laramie are bad enough that she can now terminate tenured faculty members, & use many other options, as methods for balancing the budget (link); More coverage on how the funding situation of TOPS in Louisiana is pushing high school students out of the state where they are receiving better financial packages (link).
Also noticed: A new 'Athletic Director U.' segment was released last night inked by GAME, Inc. founder & Rutgers professor Belzer on 'The Self-Aware Athletic Director' with thoughts from DHR International's Sugiyama (link); Here's Nike's video celebrating the NBA Championship for the Cleveland Cavaliers titled "Worth the Wait" (link); Forbes contributor Williams reviews the 'athliesure' apparel battle between Under Armour & Lululemon (link); Former Arizona Track AC Carter, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a student-athlete, filed a defamation suit against the plaintiff's attorney claiming lies were spread to the media (link).
