Caseload Ratio Community Meeting on July 13

Lanterman's Programs and Services committee will be hosting a community meeting to share our caseload ratio data, as well as our plans to reduce caseload ratios, on Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in the Berendo Room on the 3rd floor at Lanterman Regional Center located at 3303 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90010.

Spanish and Korean translation will be available if interested parties RSVP and request this service in advance. Please RSVP by Monday, July 11, 2016 with Gabriela Sanchez at 213.252.4930 or gsanchez@lanterman.org.

Budget Update
The Budget was sent to the Governor by the June 15 deadline, and is now waiting for his signature which will occur by/before June 30. Until the Trailer Bill Language is approved, we will not really know the full actions taken, however, some of the issues that have been on the table that will affect regional centers include:
  • A proposal to require regional centers to report why they use the additional service coordinator positions for anything other than Medicaid Waiver caseload relief.
  • A proposed $300,000 for DDS to develop a data dashboard that will track regional center performance on a number of issues, including CMS Final Rule, competitive integrated employment, fair hearing and complaint data.
  • A proposal to require regional centers to consult with stakeholders on measures to improve disparity outcomes.
  • A proposal to allow Local Advisory Committees to provide outreach and training on Self-Determination.
We will provide updates as developments in the budget process warrant.
Life After High School ~ Project SEARCH Graduation and College 2 Career Program Orientation
PROJECT SEARCH CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATED ON JUNE 7
Back in November when we first shared about the Project SEARCH program, Adrian Garcia, Erik Morales and Jaime Rodriguez (top photo, left to right) had only recently started their internships at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. And on June 7, they became the first class to graduate from the Project SEARCH program.

A slideshow shown during the graduation ceremonies highlighted their many contributions and really demonstrated how these three interns were part of the Kaiser staff. As part of their various rotations, they could be found working the reception desk, prepping patient rooms, stocking scrubs and surgical supplies, distributing mail, filing, delivering in-patient meals, and setting up in between patients in physical therapy, just to name some of their responsibilities.

They also made a number of friends along the way, evidenced by the photos celebrating birthdays and holidays, in the cafeteria having lunch together, working out together and even recruiting for the next class of interns.

Congratulations to all three of them on their graduation from this innovative program and we wish them all the best. All three will be continuing on at Kaiser as paid employees.

About Project SEARCH
Project SEARCH is a program for young adults with disabilities to learn job skills through unpaid internships. The interns are in their last year at LAUSD and they will participate in three 10-week internships throughout various Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center departments, such as OB/GYN, Ambulatory Services and Volunteer Services.

The goal for Project SEARCH interns is to gain valuable work experience that will lead to paid employment after graduation. LAUSD students interested in finding out more about Project SEARCH should speak with their teacher or their service coordinator at Lanterman.

For general information about Project SEARCH visit their Web site.

Research Studies Need Caregivers of Adults with ASD and Young Adults with ASD to Take Surveys
Predictors of Employment: CSUDH Graduate Students in Occupational Therapy Seek Caregivers of Adults with ASD to Participate in Survey
Graduate-level Occupational Therapy students at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) are exploring the skills that may predict employment. They are conducting a research study on the functional abilities of adults (18 years and up) with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) from the caregiver's perspective. Caregivers of adults with ASD are invited to complete an online survey regarding the adult's skills and participation in activities.

If you have questions about this survey, contact adultswithASDstudy@gmail.com.

Social Participation and Quality of Life in Young Adults with ASD: CSUDH Researchers Seek Young Adults with ASD/Asperger's to Participate in Survey
Researchers at CSUDH want to learn more about how young adults with high functioning autism, including Asperger's syndrome, view their social participation and quality of life. They hope to get firsthand responses from individuals with ASD/Asperger's between the ages of 18 and 35 years. Few studies have asked young adults with ASD to directly report on their social experience and quality of life and instead have chosen to obtain this information from parents, teachers and other family members. However, they want to hear  how satisfied young adults with Autism/Asperger's are with their current levels of social participation, what level and type of participation they value, whether they feel they need assistance in improving their experience, and if they would be interested in helping to develop and/or participate in a social skills program with occupational therapists.

If you have questions about this survey, contact dominguezresearch@gmail.com.
