Developing Thinking Skills Through Play

Can you solve this problem?

A milkman has two empty jugs; a three gallon jug and a five gallon jug. How can he measure exactly one gallon without wasting any milk?

This week we're having a look at fun ways to help your child learn to understand logic, solve problems, and think strategically.

These skills are important for everything from being independent (being able to solve a problem without an adult's help) to learning STEM subjects.

Toys can give children puzzles to solve and mean they can move objects around to work out the answer. Answer: The milkman filled the three gallon jug, and then emptied the contents into the five gallon jug. He then filled the three gallon jug again, and continued to fill the five gallon jug until it was full. The milk remaining in the three gallon jug was precisely one gallon.
