John DeVore, MA '04, writes, "Speaking of Silence: Christians and Buddhists on the Contemplative Way (1987) always inspires new learning, new reflections, and new experiences. A special thank-you to Dr. Judith Simmer-Brown for the marvelous essay (Introduction) that traces the development of the new kind of dialogue that began with Thomas Merton's 1968 journey to Asia. ("Preface to the Second Edition", in Susan Szpakowski, ed., Speaking of Silence: Christians and Buddhists in Dialogue. Halifax: Vajradhatu Publications, 2005, pp. 3-10.)" Learn More
Cecelia Rose LaPointe, MA '06, launched Waub Ajijaak Press in November 2015. This small press focuses on Great Lakes Anishinaabe stories, children's stories, and poetry. She says, "We are committed to cultural revitalization and preservation. In honor of hereditary Ogema Waub Ajijaak (Chief White Crane) this press was started to honor ancestors, culture, decolonization, healing, heritage, matriarchy, recovery, sobriety/wellbriety, and traditions."
John Sakkis, MFA '06, has published a new book of poetry, RAVE ON! just out from BOTH BOTH Books: "Poetry. A book of parties, monsters, paranoia, UFOs, friends and the Bay Area. Set in the 90s and beyond, John Sakkis's RAVE ON! finds beauty in the "trainwreck," that liminal space where dissonant sounds and kinetic energies commingle, forming a new kind of static, where the party begins after the music stops." (available to order through Small Press Distribution).
Ashlie Schares, BA '04, was featured in the Longmont Times-Call for offering "Sing Yourself Happy," singing classes for adults who feel shy about their voices. Read the article.
Vonie Stillson, BA '04, introduced the field of DMT to pop culture convention attendees sharing "Presented Aquatic Dance/Movement Therapy" and "More Aquatic Dance/Movement Therapy" at the 50th annual ADTA conference in October, and "Cosplay as Active Imagination Through DMT Goggles" at Geekonomicon in December.
Damaris Webb, MFA '08, co-produced and directed a new play, Cottonwood in the Flood, as part of the Vanport Mosaic Festival in Portland, Oregon. The play tells the tale of a fictional African-American family and their experiences in Vanport, Oregon during WWII. Vanport was a city of 40,000 people built in 110 days to meet the nation's demand for ships to support the war effort. The entire city was destroyed in a flood just six years after it was built. Damaris also serves as an Artistic Director for the festival - a 4-day multi-disciplinary celebration commemorating the 68th anniversary of the Vanport Flood, uniting Portland area residents through historical and artistic tributes.
