June 2016

Summer greetings to you!  I hope this summer is providing much relaxation, refreshment and relief (hopefully from the heat!).   Many of you are still teaching, and going as strong as ever, maybe even stronger with a little more flexibility in students’ schedules.  Some of you teach, maybe in a little more relaxed style and setting, and add fun and creative activities for your students.  Some of you take a break, and enjoy some much-needed catch up time, or travel and family time.  Whatever your circumstance this summer, I know if you’re like me, teaching is never far from your mind.  New ideas for fall, new students, new schedules, new events, and new goals.  What I love about DVMTA is that our teachers are always looking for ways to improve, and are so willing to share their successes with the rest of us.  Thank you for your contributions to DVMTA, no matter how large or small.  We all work together, combining our strengths to give the greatest experience possible for our teachers and students.  I believe everyone has something valuable to contribute, even if it’s just friendly advice or help to another member.  Thank you, again, and have a wonderful summer!

-Shannon Payne, DVMTA President

2016-17 DVMTA Registration Renewal:

If you have not yet renewed your membership for next year please do so by July 1st to take advantage of the $5 discount for early renewals.  $35 before July 1st, $40 after July 1st.  As a reminder, membership year is August 1st each year through July 31st the following year, and registration begins in April.  Membership forms are available on DVMTA.org under the “Events” tab.  Look for “docs”, then “Other Forms” folder. (Please note that in the future there may be some changes to the website that will affect where this document is found.) Or simply click the yellow button in this newsletter.

Also, we are highly encouraging members to renew online, even if you do not wish to pay online.  Online registrations are automatically placed in a spreadsheet that is easily organized and maintained by our membership committee and will make their job much easier.  Please consider ☺  If you choose to mail your payment, please mail it to Tammy Shorts 2514 E. Sierra Madre Ave. Gilbert, AZ 85296.  If you need to contact her you can do so at 7shorts@cox.net.

Website Update:

We have been busy fine tuning the website and getting everything in tip-top shape for the new year.  Many thanks to Bren Palmer, her husband, Darin, and John Gardner for putting it all together.  Also thanks to Tammy Shorts and Hillary Bitter who will be working hard getting our membership lists updated.

A big thank you to all teachers who participated in and helped with Achievement Day! We had over 200 students register with 20 teachers, and everything ran smoothly because of your help. We had students from Primer level up to Level 12. Theory and technique are required for all students; sight reading and ear training are by far the most popular options, followed by composers and duets, but we also had a few original compositions and written reports. Thanks to all teachers for their work on preparing these students so well.

If you did not enter students this year, please consider entering at least a few next year. The requirements are not difficult, especially if you keep them in mind throughout the year. Working on technique and theory should be a routine part of our teaching. Not all teachers work on sight reading or ear training continuously, but it’s easy to work in some practice with a little planning. If you have any questions at all about Achievement Day or how to prepare students, the event chairmen are happy to help you.

Saturday, Oct. 22nd – Music Marathon – locations yet to be announced, registration will be due Friday, Sept. 30th at our General Meeting.

Saturday and Sunday Nov. 19th-20th - Original Composition Festival – location to be announced.  Please note:  Our fabulous evaluator, Penni Scott, has some schedule conflicts and is needing compositions earlier this year.  The submission deadline for compositions and manuscripts will be Fri. Sept. 30th.

Speaking of composition, Jennifer Eklund has available, free of charge on her website, composition packets for download.  Designed for aspiring composers, many of your students will enjoy the creative ideas and space for making all their composition notes.  A great resource!

Interested in a Field Trip with your students this summer?  Carly Walton, one of our newest members, is considering taking a group of piano students on a tour at the Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix over summer or in the fall. It would be a great summer activity and would love to invite other teachers and students to come along if interested (take advantage of the group rate prices).  Please contact her at carlyjo.studio@gmail.com.

See you in August!
