OUSA Halfway to $50,000 "Next 50 Years" Goal

Thanks to leadership gifts to the 50th Anniversary Campaign by the OUSA Board of Directors, staff, lead donors and the Quantico Orienteering Club, OUSA is halfway to our goal of raising $50,000 by the North American Orienteering Championships.

These donations will go directly to marketing, mapping, and land access projects directly designed to support our clubs, especially small and medium sized, and set the stage for U.S. orienteering’s next 50 years.

To give, go to www.orienteeringusa.org, select Support Orienteering on the home page (or Donate in the top menu) and click on “Orienteering USA 50th Anniversary.” Thank you for your support.

Thanks to Vice President/Clubs Greg Lennon

Orienteering USA would like to acknowledge the recent work of our Vice President for Clubs Greg Lennon. In the past year Greg has been instrumental in the colonization of clubs in Florida, Iowa and Virginia. Additionally, he established a discount buying program for clubs to purchase Sportident boxes and finger sticks as well as AED defibrillators.

Thanks, Greg, for your hard work. If you have an idea or would like to reach out to Greg with other ways to assist clubs, please contact him.

Silva and Golden Service Awards - Please Nominate

It’s awards season and nominations are now being taken for the 2016 Silva and Golden Service Awards. Nominations are due by August 1, 2016.

The Silva Award is Orienteering USA’s highest volunteer award and it is given to the volunteer who has done the most to promote and grow orienteering over the past five years. The winner is selected by the Executive Committee of Orienteering USA’s Board of Directors from nominees presented by clubs. Nominations with background information should be sent to: Susie DeWitt at skdewitt@snet.net

The Golden Service Award recognizes volunteers at the club level. Each club can make one nomination.  The Awards Committee then determines the winners. Nominations should be sent to Awards Committee head Clare Durand, rules@orienteeringusa.org

More about these awards can be found at http://bit.ly/2016-Service-Awards

2016 Orienteering USA Annual General Meeting Announced

The 2016 OUSA Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 17th from 4:00–6:00 pm at the Hampton Inn in Danbury, CT. The Hampton Inn will be the host hotel for the US Two-day Classic Orienteering Championships. All active members of Orienteering USA may attend; delegates will be appointed to represent clubs for voting purposes.

US Forest Service Announces Streamlined Permit Process

The US Forest Service has announced changes to the special use permitting process that orienteering clubs (among others) use to obtain permits for events.

These changes are intended to make it easier to get a permit, or even, for example, to waive the need for a permit if the proposed use would have only "nominal impact on lands, resources, and programs or operations", which could be the case for many orienteering events.

For more information see the USFS press release, available online here.

Board of Directors Self-Nominations Open

Between now and September 1, Orienteering USA is accepting self-nominations for its Board of Directors. The election will be at the Annual General Meeting.

For more information on board of director responsibilities and the nomination process, contact Orienteering USA Secretary Donna Fluegel at fleugeldonna@sbcglobal.net.

Certificates of Insurance Update

Thanks to all of you working with OUSA insurance agent Loomis & Lapann for Certificates of Insurance.  Currently Loomis is in an extremely busy cycle of the year and their turn-around time is a little longer than normal, so we ask that you please plan accordingly.  If you are having any issues, contact Glen at gjs@orienteeringusa.org.

Summer and Fall Championships Are Coming
