Newsletter #11

30th July, 2016

Kia ora whānau,

Welcome back to you all and a very big welcome to the new families who have joined the Arthur Street School community this week.

This term is shaping up to be yet another busy one!  With only 9 weeks this term and week one almost complete, the term will zoom by!  With that in mind, please pay special attention to the 'School Calendar' section below to ensure you mark in your diaries the many activities and events comin.

In anticipation of next term, I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that swimming costs for term 4 will only cost each child $5.00 for the whole term's swimming, thanks to a grant received from Bendigo Trust. We understand that swimming costs over the years has been a costly experience for the school and families and I have taken an opportunity to apply for funds to partially cover this cost for term 4.  We know that you all value the opportunity for your children to learn to swim and hope that this reduced cost for term 4 will be of assistance.

As a reminder to all parents, when your child/children are away from school the actual reason your child is absent must be given eg. sickness, family gathering, holiday, bereavement, appointments etc, this is a Ministry of Education requirement. Leaving messages on the school answer phone is a great way to let the school know that your child will be absent and the reason for their absence.

Keep warm and have a great weekend everyone!

Nga mihi,

Kim Blackwood

Principal

School Accounts

This a timely reminder about school payments and accounts.  Michelle will be sending out updated accounts in the coming week.  Here is the information that was sent out in February about how the accounts are structured and great ways that you can pay your account.

2016 Activity Fee
The activity fee of $30 per student has been introduced to reduce how often we are asking parents for small amounts of money for class trips etc.  The staff are budgeting their class programme/activities to $5.00 per term for class outings and the extra $10 is to cover any school wide groups/performers that we get into the school.  At this point the $30 is a starting point as this is our first year.
The $30.00 paid for each child is paid into your child’s account and events are deducted from there.  If at the year’s end there is a credit balance you can transfer it to other fees that are due or if your full school account is in credit, receive a refund or transfer it to the following year.
This fee does not include any sports teams your child joins, swimming and camps etc as these fees are not known and change depending on numbers, the outside providers and the fees they charge.

Why not set up an automatic payment?
A great way to manage the ongoing costs associated with school is having an automatic payment set up.  Paying $5.00 or $10.00 a week is a great way to stay on top of these costs.  Here are the School details if you wish to take advantage of this:
Account name:   Arthur Street School Board of Trustees
Account Number:   06-0901-0397826-00
Reference:   Family Name
Particulars:   (What you’re paying for – activity fee, swimming, futsal etc)

School Donations for 2016
The voluntary school donation has been set by the Board of Trustees and is to remain the same as 2015.
One child attending school is $160.00, two children is reduced to $270.00 and three children or more is $390.00.

If you have any concerns about school payments please don’t hesitate to come and talk to either Michelle in the office or myself.

Arthur Street School Happenings!
Room Three

The children have been gearing up for both the Olympic Games and our School Fair. We are participating in ongoing discussions and activities around the games, to build an awareness around its history, geographic location and events.

We are developing our poetic writing skills this term by studying different types of poems. So far the children have written shape poems of choice, some decided to write about balloons, ice cream, dragons and the heart. This will also be explored through singing nursery rhymes and limericks

For mathematics, Room Three children are gaining the confidence in problem solving by tackling worded maths problems. They are also required to write down how they solved the problems and the importance around unpacking key words within each question. We have also had lots of fun counting through dance, singing and playing games. Additionally, we are beginning to look at sets of things in order to develop our multiplication and division strategies.

We are busily preparing for the cross country. On Wednesday we walked up to Robin Hood Park for a practice. Our senior buddies helped us navigate the course which was great fun, not forgetting to mention a little bit muddy too!
Room 7

Over the past week Room 7 has been looking at statistics in maths. We have been surveying our class with our questions on whatever subject we choose, within reason, using tally charts to collect information e.g. ‘What is your favourite car, movie, TV show, song?’ etc. After we had collected our data from the class we transferred the information into graphs, showing which options had more or less votes.
We have also been looking at language features such as proverbs, hyperbole, similes and metaphors and onomatopoeia. In the afternoons we have been preparing for the school cross country using the beep test as a way of training, each day trying to better our previous record. In this picture, we had only just finished the beep test. On Wednesday we also did a training run at the course to see the route and also use it as a chance to practice, taking younger students up with us. In coming weeks, we will be studying food in technology and start up a burger restaurant inviting all students in the school to try our burgers. More information to come.

EXPERIENCE A NEW CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS  AND
LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE AT HOME

In July students from over 25 countries around the world, will be arriving in New Zealand to study at local high schools for 3-10 months.
Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a volunteer capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide international students with the chance to study and experience life in New Zealand. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill.
If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today.
