Strengthening Governance & Trust

The Charity Commission has published new guidance for charity trustees about fundraising from the public. The guidance sets out 6 key principles to help trustees comply with their legal duties when overseeing their charity's fundraising, and also includes a checklist for trustees to evaluate their charity's performance against the legal requirements and good practice recommendations set out in the guidance.

How can we rebuild public trust in charities?
The Charity Commission has published a report that showed that trust and confidence in charities has fallen to the lowest recorded level since monitoring began in 2005. The report finds this can be attributed to critical media coverage of charity practices, distrust about how charities spend donations, and a lack of knowledge among the public about where their donations go. Perceptions of aggressive fundraising tactics have also contributed to the decline in trust.
How charities are responding to the fall in public trust  Charities must work to strengthen their governance and explore better ways to explain how they work to ensure the public can have confidence in them.

Many charities need to strengthen their boards if they are going to survive. Many charities have got by with weak and ineffective boards according to this recent blog.  The HARCVS Strengthening Your Governance training course gives a good overview of the roles and responsibilities and by the end of the course you will understand the key principles of good governance, know the barriers to ensuring good governance and know how to make improvements. Our training is designed for trustees, chief execs, directors and key decision makers.

Thinking of changing your charity’s structure?
Here’s a checklist you can use at a trustee meeting.  And remember HARCVS can help you choose the right legal structure and guide you along the way.
