In 2014, WFED funded a collaborative program between The Center for Violence Free Relationships and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. The 'Stop the Cycle' program focused on early detection and intervention of domestic violence with the ultimate goal of improving the mental health of children and families.
With WFED grant funding these organizations trained approximately 125 'Bigs' on early detection and the impact of domestic violence on their 'Littles,' and multiple families were referred to beneficial services through these partnering agencies.
This program helped to improve our community through education, training and agency collaboration. Together, we helped make a difference in the lives of individuals like Jason:
Jason, age 11, was home when a violent confrontation between his mother and father broke out. The police were called and both parents were arrested. Thankfully, the Big Brother was called and took temporary custody of Jason. The Big Brother had participated in the 'Stop the Cycle' training and was very well aware of the impact this would have on Jason. He was able to allow Jason to share his feelings and knew the appropriate responses for this type of situation. This Big Brother will continue to be a positive role model in Jason’s life and with his influence Jason will know this behavior is unacceptable.
