Meet Our New Vice President
 
The CalMutuals Board of Directors, at its July board meeting, elected Mr. Dave Armstrong to serve as the Association's Vice President.

President Lisa Yamashita-Lopez issued the following statement:

"During his tenure as a Director on our Board, Mr. Armstrong has displayed a strong commitment to the Association and our members. We are grateful for his leadership, enthusiasm to help and continued dedication. I look forward to working closely with Mr. Armstrong on matters before the Association."

Dave Armstrong is the General Manager of South Mesa Water Company in the City of Calimesa and has served on the CalMutuals Board of Directors since 2014.

 
SWRCB Implements Paperless Office System
 

In an effort to reduce paper and increase efficiency, the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) now requires all monthly monitoring reports and other water quality correspondence to be submitted electronically. The effective date of the change was July 1st.

Water Distribution Operations & Maintenance Class
 

The Academy of Water Education (which is the on-site training center for the California Rural Water Association) will be offering a five (5) day course to prepare students to take the Grade 1 or Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator exam.

The course satisfies the 36 hour (3-unit) Specialized Training Requirement for the Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator exam. There are no prerequisites for this course. Class materials and a calculator with a ten-digit display will be provided.


Field experienced instructors will discuss the ins and outs of being an operator, bringing their practical knowledge to the classroom, and will include hands-on workshops.

TIME:  8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (M-Th) and 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM (F)
LOCATION:  Sacramento

Diagnosing and Solving Well Problems for Optimal Performance
 

On September 20th, the California Rural Water Association (CRWA) will host a workshop in Beverly Hills to discuss the various tools and techniques available to diagnose and treat various well problems ranging from bacterial contamination to reduced well yields, well sanding and well casing issues.  Well rehabilitation and maintenance techniques will also be discussed.  The goal is to optimize operational efficiency and reduce operating costs of the well, as well as increase the operational life span of the well to reduce overall capital costs to the water purveyor.

Water Distribution Review Classes

Over the next month, the California Rural Water Association (CRWA) will be offering a series of two-day review classes designed to enhance your working knowledge of water distribution.

Each class includes a pre-test, detailed instruction on the expected range of knowledge for distribution operators, practice exams to help operators brush-up on the many aspects of distribution systems and assistance with test-taking skills.

Dates/Locations:
August 3-4:  San Luis Obispo and Oroville
August 10-11:  Sonoro
August 17-18:  Morgan Hill and Apple Valley
August 24-25:  McFarland
August 31-September 1:  Yreka and Fullerton
September 7-8:  Ukiah and Five Points

The cost for the two-day workshop is $350.00

Each day is worth 6 SWRCB Water Contact Hours and 6 REHS CEUs

AWWA Offering Online Classes

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is offering a series of Distance Learning classes for Water Treatment Operators and High Tech operators.

WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR CLASSES

Each course is 60 hours, costs $525 and offers 6 Continuing Education Units.  The Level 1 course took place this past week (July 25th) but there are still available slots in the Level 2 and Level 3 classes scheduled for September and October.

Level 2:  Processes  (September 12 - October 14)
This course covers more in-depth concepts and practices about conventional water treatment processes, membrane/UV processes, and basic laboratory and sampling skills.

Level 3:  Analysis & Applications   (October 17 - November 18)
This course offers a combination of advanced process troubleshooting knowledge to prepare you for supervisory responsibilities and legal obligations for regulatory compliance.

HIGH TECH OPERATOR CLASSES

In addition, AWWA is offering three courses for high tech water operators. Each course lasts 12 hours over a 3 week period, costs $405 and consists of pre-recorded presentations, online learning activities, videos, quizzes and evaluations.

Level 1:  Process Monitoring and Control   (September 19 - October 7)  
This course discusses the devices used to monitor and control processes and equipment in water treatment and distribution systems. The course begins with an overview of device symbols and how they are used to represent systems and then relates those symbols to real-world devices.

Level 2:  Applications and Tools 
(October 10 - October 28)
This course reviews applications, tools and technologies available to track, monitor, and maintain equipment, and to represent, locate, and communicate with remote facilities and equipment. There will be a focus on CMMS, GIS, and GPS.

Level 3:  Data Management 
(October 31 - November 18)
This course reviews information management technologies, both server-based and Web-hosted. Participants will discuss and compare management systems, as well as applications available for collecting and managing performance data and methods available for storing information online securely.
