CBH History Fact of the Month
The Story of Mitzvah Meals:  How One Mitzvah Has Nourished CBH for 18 Years
 
The idea to provide a nourishing meal to those experiencing illness, loss or even the simcha of a new baby was not invented at Bet Haverim.  Nor can the Jewish people lay claim to the concept as their exclusive domain.  However, what is a fact is that the effort to develop and implement an organized, managed CBH Mitzvah Meals program was born in 1998 in response to the special bond shared by two CBH partners.  

In 1992, former CBH Board President Esther Novak had lived in Davis and been a partner at the synagogue only a few years when she became acquainted with Suzette Wright, who was at that time a CBH board member.  Both Esther and Suzette had daughters involved in the CBH Youth Group when Suzette was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Initially, Suzette's cancer went into remission.  However, in 1998, with her daughter now away at graduate school, Suzette suffered a recurrence of her disease.  To ease her friend's burdens, Esther not only made a meal herself, but got on the phone and lined up a succession of meals from others in the congregation, to last throughout Suzette's time of greatest need.  

Sadly, Suzette succumbed to cancer during Passover in 1999.  However, Esther felt that a continued Mitzvah Meals program could deliver to others in need the same sense of comfort that Suzette was able to experience in her final months.  For two years, Esther, employed full-time as a MD, took calls from and about those who could benefit from a week or two of Mitzvah Meals, and in turn made many phone calls to reach out to cooks and form schedules.  When Esther was elected to the CBH board in 2001, she proposed the official adoption of the Mitzvah Meals program by the congregation, which the board approved.  

Around this time, Esther was ready to step away from the Mitzvah Meals logistics, and handed the reins to her fellow board member, Joan Sublett.  After 15 years of organizing countless meals delivered to many dozens of congregants via "reply to all" emails, Joan earlier this year moved the program to Sign-Up Genius.  This has raised the profile of the Mitzvah Meals program with a new generation of CBH partners!  If you are not already on the Mitzvah Meals notification list, and would like to receive a message when meal sign-ups are needed for a CBH partner in need, please click here.  Joy Cohan is temporarily managing the list and the notifications while Joan is on Summer vacation.  Similarly, if you, a family member or a CBH friend is in need of meals due to a short or long-term crisis, please be in touch.

"Bliss Hippy" Musical Dharma Concert, Presented By ChaverSangha Meditation and Spiritual Practice

“Bliss Hippy,” among the winners of the 2013 Great American Song Contest, will perform a blend of folk and Americana music they call “psychedelic folk.”  The performance also will feature a musical Dharma talk.

As part of the multi-stop “California Bliss Tour,” husband and wife team Richard and Maureen Hall will travel from their home in the Missouri Ozarks, where they have been writing, performing and recording music for more than 25 years.  An ordained lay Buddhist minister and a graduate of the Community Dharma Leader program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA , Maureen has taught and practiced mindfulness-based Buddhist meditation for more than a decade.  This led the couple to integrate talks focused on the Four Bramaviharas, Mindfulness and Non-Dualism into their repertoire, and also to serve as “Dharma troubadours,” adding a musical compliment to the Dharma talks of other teachers.

In addition to having practiced Buddhist meditation for many years, Richard also is certified in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and holds a PhD in psychology serving as a Professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology.  The Halls have endeavored to build a catalog of Dharma tunes and dukka-oriented songs to supplement inspirational, folk, pop, blues and irreverent pieces which they perform at a wide variety of venues.  The humorous, “God’s For Everybody” is one of the duo’s winning entries in the Great American Song Contest two years ago.

ChaverSangha is a meditation and spiritual practice group with an emphasis on Buddhist and Jewish meditation.  The usual meeting schedule is every other Tuesday evening at Bet Haverim.  All group activities are free and open to the entire community, regardless of religious affiliation or experience with meditation.  First-time participants are welcome.

Let your voice be heard!  Review the opportunities to read or chant from our 50th Anniversary Torah at a Summer Shabbat morning service.  Take advantage of the more relaxed Summer months to revisit or learn new skills.  Not only will you feel personally fulfilled by doing so, but you will be performing a wonderful mitzvah for your CBH community!  This is especially true while Rabbi Greg is on sabbatical through late July. By Popular Demand, a Second "Team  CBH" Has Been Added!  Space Available for NINE More Players
 
CBH already has taken the tournament lead by being the fully-formed first team for the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region Community Kickball Tournament.  In fact, last week's waiting list now has sprung a second team, which means up to nine more players may join the fun.  The tournament will be held on Sunday, August 7, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Sacramento's William Land Park.  "Team CBH" currently is planning at least one non-mandatory practice and picnic, about 7-10 days ahead of the competition.

All of the Sacramento-area synagogues, Shalom School and Hillel at Davis and Sacramento will be competing for what organizers hope will become an annual trophy and bragging rights.  Let's set the standard and bring the first championship home to Davis!

Celebrate Summer With Jewish Federation Programs 

In a effort to serve and connect the more than 25,000 Jews of the eight-county Sacramento region, the Federation offers CBH partners an array of monthly programs for young families, senior citizens and the disabled, in particular.  To view a full schedule of activities, please click here. 

The following Davis-based program may be of particular interest:
 
Caregivers' Support Group at CBH:  spouses, family members and friends who are acting as caregivers for a loved one are invited to participate.  The group provides a warm environment offering support and strategies to address the unique needs and stresses of caregiving.  Facilitated by CBH Partner Jane Zeiger, LCSW.  The current morning session meets twice a month through early August, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.  An evening session may begin again this Fall.  Drop-ins are welcome at $10 per session with advance notice.  For more information, or to RSVP, contact Jewish Family Service Community Social Worker Alicia Mittleman at 916-205-0688.

Rabbi Greg Recommends:  "A Taste of Hope:  A Play in Three Courses"
8:00 p.m., Warehouse Artist Lofts Courtyard, 1108 R Street, Sacramento
 
A multi-sensory story of seven women from three generations sharing family recipes while imprisoned in a concentration camp, this play weaves food traditions and fears of war into a simple story of love.  Audience members actually enjoy samples of the recipes, as well as the performance! 

This production came to CBH in early 2015, and Rabbi Greg shared the following reflections:  "As we followed the experiences of a group of women through the cycle of the holidays, everyone in the audience was touched by the tenacity, faith and hope that emboldened these prisoners who had so little, but shared so much with one another.  We loved to taste and partake of the foods created throughout the play, which deepened our personal connection with the story and the characters."

Last Summer, several CBH partners enjoyed a night out at Raley Field with the B'nai Israel Brotherhood.  It's time to hit a home run again and spend another fun nine innings with our haverim from across the causeway!  One of the covered Blue Moon Party Decks is reserved for the group's use; a $55 ticket includes stadium admission and an all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner.

All submissions must include contact information, and may be edited for length, clarity, readability and compliance with CBH editorial style.  The placement and frequency of submissions within the e-tone will be at the discretion of the Communications Specialist and/or the Executive Director. No item will be included more than four weeks prior to an event/meeting date, although exceptions may be made for CBH fundraisers.
