A Message From The Rhode Island Department of Health
Regarding Influenza Nasal Spray Vaccine

Dear Provider,

As you may be aware, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently
voted in favor of an interim recommendation that live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the “nasal spray” flu vaccine, should not be used during the 2016-2017 flu season due to ineffectiveness.

CDC presented data showing 3 percent effectiveness for nasal spray vaccine among children 2 through 17 years during 2015-2016. This estimate means no protective benefit could be measured. This disappointing LAIV data follows two previous seasons (2013-2014 and 2014-2015) showing poor and/or lower than expected vaccine effectiveness for LAIV. With this knowledge, ACIP could not recommend its use in the upcoming 2016-2017 season.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is currently working with CDC to obtain additional injectable flu vaccine to replace LAIV ("Flumist"). Please note that the restriction applies to both adult and pediatric Flumist. If you have already reserved Flumist for the upcoming season in OSMOSSIS, there is nothing you need to do. RIDOH will adjust your reservation based on products available. If you have not yet reserved flu vaccine for the upcoming season, please do not reserve any doses for Flumist.

The absence of an intranasal option is likely to be disappointing for many families.
RIDOH is in the process of developing talking points for your conversations with patients and families regarding this change in flu vaccination practice. We will send additional information as it becomes available. If you have any questions, please contact your Immunization Representative.

Thank you.

Best Regards,
The Rhode Island Department of Health - Office of Immunization
