P2 in the News
by Erin Pote
More and more we are hearing about public participation in the news as it's becoming the norm for organizations and governments to seek the input of the public in decision making. In this newsletter edition, we share some thoughts on a few current P2 news stories as well as some P2 news of our own. This fall Dialogue Partners is celebrating the milestone of its 10 year anniversary! We are so grateful for the last 10 years of people, places, stories and conversations that we were privileged to be a part of. We are looking forward to our fall/winter course offerings and we may have a few surprises up our sleeves so stay tuned. Wishing all our friends and colleagues a safe and relaxing summer!
Sincerely,
The Dialogue Partners Team

Ready To Engage? Probably Not.
by Stephani Roy McCallum
Over the last week I have been watching a situation unfold and rapidly escalate in the City of Calgary. I think there are some big questions that should be asked about the nature of public engagement, and the ways in which citizens and government intersect. In short form, it goes like this...more>

Video of the Month

Comedian John Oliver provides a review of the Brexit decision. Warning: lots of swearing presented in a highly amusing way.
Also, take a look at this alternate approach to the big decision presented in an essay by John Gastil.

What Do You Do?
by Erin Pote
It all started with one question.
“So, what do you do?”
It was an innocent enough question. I would bet most of us have asked this question several times in our lives. We meet someone new, we make small talk, we genuinely want to know more about a person so we ask...more>

What is a Leader?
by Stephani Roy McCallum
The news is full of stories of leaders; thoughtful, capable, accountable, inspiring leaders, and divisive, authoritative, polarizing leaders. Leaders succeeding, leaders failing, leaders being toppled. When we talk about leadership, it seems we each have different ideas and images that come to mind about what constitutes a leader, and what makes a good or great leader. In a recent workshop I facilitated with a group of senior leaders, I asked “what is a leader?” I heard things like:
- Humble
- Inspiring
- Accountable
- Authentic
- Open
- Courageous

Picture of the Month
In a recent session, a participant defined community engagement as, "Courageous work that is never done." We love this definition!
