HHDL
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama's birthday is typically celebrated as a national holiday with long-life prayers dedicated to His Holiness and community gatherings. He was born on 6 July, 1935. Named Lhamo Thondup he was born into a Tibetan farming family in the small village of Taktser located in the province of Amdo. The name, Lhamo Thondup, means ‘Wish-Fulfilling Goddess’. Taktser (Roaring Tiger) was a small village that stood on a hill overlooking a broad valley.

Long Life Prayer

Here in this pure land ringed by snowy peaks,
Oh, Tenzin Gyatso, gracious loving god,
Who brings us every help and happiness-
May you stand firm 'til the end of the world!

Birthday Wishes
A mala (hindi) is a string of beads made from simple stones, precious gems, bone and other materials. Malas are used to count mantras or prayers to aid concentration while meditating.

MALAs are traditionally made with 108 beads.  The number 108 is often used because:
 - this is the number of petals in the central nervous system of Chakras
- relates to the mathematical equation of 2 squared by 3 cubed
- is twice the number of letters in the Sanskrit alphabet
- is 100th the number of breaths in an hour
The Jokhang Temple,  Zuglagkang (Tibetan: གཙུག་ལག་ཁང༌།, is located in Barkhor Square in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is considered the most sacred and important temple in Tibet; the rooftop and roof ridges hold the iconic statues of a pair of golden deer flanking a Dharma wheel. The deer symbolize the audience of the Buddha’s teaching, being gentle, receptive, and attentive.  The wheel is a royal symbol, a symbol of the power of the truths to effect liberation. The Teacher is often compared to a lion, king of beasts, whose roar overwhelms all competition.  Thus, where the deer are bearing witness to the Dharma Wheel, the Buddhist education for freedom and happiness is underway.
