If your neighbor lost her husband and was suddenly left on her own to care and provide for her four children, would you "help" her by taking her kids and placing them in an orphanage? If your friend couldn't afford daycare and struggled to find reliable childcare so she could work, would you come to her aid by offering to adopt her baby?
Neither would we.
Roots & Wings' goal is family preservation. Quite simply, it means we focus our efforts on keeping families together and preventing out-of-home placement of children as much as possible.
Family Preservation recognizes that children need protection and our goal should be to provide and ensure their safety.
Family Preservation seeks to accomplish that goal while respecting and honoring the child’s right to remain with their mother and/or father whenever possible.
Family Preservation recognizes that the parent/child relationship is a sacred connection that should not be severed without just cause and only after all means of addressing the problems within the family unit have been exhausted.
Family Preservation seeks to uphold the right and responsibility of parents to protect, care for and provide for their children.
Family Preservation is about helping families overcome crisis and remain intact by providing the necessary resources, opportunities and aid to do so.
Family Preservation is about empowering families to stay together. Mothers and fathers in poverty need to receive family-centered counseling. They need training, guidance, and support to remain whole as a family and address the instability or problems that threaten to tear the them apart.
Be a part of the movement to channel every effort into empowering families to stay together.
