The Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival returns for another year at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford, SK from July 15 to 17. Organized by the Saskatchewan Craft Council (SCC), the festival is a long running tradition in the Battlefords. Juried artists offer jewellery, pottery, clothing, sculpture in metal, stone, and glass, visual art, stained and fused glass, and turned wood. Saskatchewan-made food products are also available for purchase.
This year the SCC is excited to partner with Dance Saskatchewan and the Chapel Gallery to present Artistic Workshops for Kids. Building on similar workshops held last year, these three 2-hour workshops will feature aboriginal hoop dancing taught by Lawrence Roy, block printing led by the Chapel Gallery, and clay handbuilding led by the SCC, taught by artist Teresa Gagne. The workshops will be held Friday at 1 pm, and Saturday at 10 am and 1 pm.
Teresa is thrilled to be back leading workshops at the market this year. "I really enjoyed being part of this project last year. A child remarking, 'this is better than computer games' gave me a lot of pleasure. I enjoy sharing my passion for clay with others."
Workshops are open to drop-ins, but pre-registration is encouraged. Cost is $10 per child, and includes one adult admission to the Handcraft Festival. Call Dance Saskatchewan for more information and to register at 1-800-667-8480.
