June Newsletter

Dear Friends

Sumbandila has had a very busy June month with lots of exciting news. Rosy’s formal graduation ceremony in Cape Town, followed by her graduate lunch hosted by one of her sponsors - the Michael and Susan Dell foundation. Julie Brangstrup from Cash and Rocket sponsors and hosts Naho Maduwa on his first ever abroad journey to London. Sumbandila students at University and at school complete their midyear exams successfully, Thiofhi Lambani gets matric dance dresses donated for Sumbandila and our Sumbandila baby Hope shows off her artwork.

Sumbandila Story of the Month

Sumbandila's University house in Pretoria

Some of our University students talk about the benefits of the 'Yellow House' accommodation in Pretoria

Student accommodation is a massive problem at South African Universities. In 2015, thanks to the hard work of Cash and Rocket, Julie Brangstrup and all the ladies who raised funds on the 2014 and 2015 Cash and Rocket tour, Sumbandila was able to purchase a house in Pretoria where some of our University students can live together and support one another. The house is not only close to the University but it is also close to 2 flats that Sumbandila rents for other students. Students pay rent from their bursary allowances and for those who are not fully funded, their rent is added to their interest-free loan accounts which will be paid back once they are in the workplace.

It is wonderful to have a place where Sumbandila students far from home can live in a supportive familiar environment.

Holiday school begins with a special visitor from America

The five-day holiday school for the Sumbandila Outliers hosted from June 27th to the 1st of July, was delighted to welcome Antoinette Quarshie who is the Co-ordinator of Community Engagement at Riverdale school in New York. "Q" as she likes to be called, was previously a middle school  English Teacher who met Leigh Bristow through the African Leadership Academy and promised to visit Ridgeway and Sumbandila. Despite only just finishing her own academic year in New York, Q generously offered to teach a literature course during the Sumbandila winter holiday school. Not only has Q generously volunteered her time, but she also secured a donation for over 300 books from her school, Riverdale, to be printed for the Ridgeway and Sumbandila students. We would also like to thank our continued supporters at Leach Printers, who worked tirelessly to ensure the books were printed in time for the holiday school.

During the students five days of holiday school, the Outliers have extra tuition in Maths, Science, Biology, IT and English. The senior students will also spend a significant amount of time revising their Maths and Science on the RETHINK online revision programme and preparing for the National Benchmark Tests with the NBT Software. A big thank you to Doug Hoernle from RETHINK for the generous donation of the software, as well as NBT for who kindly supply the NBT software at a reduced price - thank you both!
Not only is the holiday school academically important, but it is also a great opportunity for the students to enjoy group sports, develop social interactions and to share their meals together!

Rosy's Cape Town graduation ceremony

Very proud moment as we watch Rosy graduate!
Leigh was honoured to be a guest at Rosy's formal graduation in Cape Town on June 9th where Rosy was awarded her undergraduate degree. Rosy is currently doing her honours in Cape Town. On Monday the 9th Rosy was invited to speak at the graduation luncheon hosted by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, who partially sponsored Rosy throughout her undergraduate degree alongside Investec.
The American based Michael and Susan Dell Foundation not only partially sponsors students but gives intensive mentorship and support, which has been a very important part of Rosy’s success at the University of Cape Town. The lunch was also attended by members of the UCT staff and the Vice Chancellor Dr Max Price.

Sumbandila student updates

Naho visits London

Sumbandila partner and founding CEO of Cash and Rocket, Julie Brangstrup, invited Naho Maduwa (pictured at the Buckingham Palace grounds) and Aidan Bristow to stay with her and her family in London for the school holidays. Naho had never been in an aeroplane before and had not left Limpopo let alone left the continent. We look forward to giving you the full story in July's newsletter!

Dresses generously donated for Matric dance

Ex Sumbandila student and part-time Sumbandila social media employee, Thiofhi Lambani, is currently studying Business in Pretoria. Thiofhi generously gives her time alongside her work and studies to collect matric dance dresses for our Sumbandila students every year. This year she received a generous donation of dresses (of which one is glamorously being modelled in the photo!) from Carla at Du Toit Designs. Thank you Carla, and thank you Thiofhi!

Rewards for Sumbandila hostel students

Every term, Sumbandila students staying at the hostel are rewarded for showing good leadership, expressing good behaviour, and for being neat and tidy. The reward receivers thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the local Mikes Kitchen restaurant where they each enjoyed a milkshake sundae.

Young artist in the making

Hope from the Ridgeway Early Childhood Development Centre can be seen here proudly showing off her artwork - we think she's done a great job!

Thank you to the University students for giving back and showing the way

Mother Teresa said “it’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving”  and Kahil Gibran said “it is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

I want to thank all the University and Ridgeway volunteers who are assisting at holiday school this week. You are able not only to understand what the current Sumbandila students are going through, but give them the best possible retrospective advice. It is also wonderful to see you sharing your skills in the classroom and on the sports field.

Thank you for “showing the way” - the principle on which Sumbandila is built.

Kind regards

Leigh Bristow
