Staying Alive
This month, EMS staff and our partners in Marin trained over 1,750 residents in the life-saving skill with our annual “Sidewalk CPR” event. Encourage your patients to visit heart.org/handsonlycpr to watch the Hands-Only CPR instructional video. Bystander CPR has been the difference between life and death for Marin County residents.

 Zika Update
Since January 2016, Marin County Health and Human Services has coordinated Zika Virus testing for more than 60 residents, with one confirmed case of Zika Virus infection. Sign up for the Health Alert Network (HAN) for timely updates or visit our website for local guidance.

 National HIV Testing Day
This month we celebrated National HIV Testing Day. All patients should be tested for HIV at least once in their life and more if at-risk. Of the more than 1.2 million people in the United States estimated to be living with HIV, approximately 12.8% are unaware of their HIV status. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Guide to Taking a Sexual History, which promotes the 5 Ps - Partners • Practices • Protection from STDs • Past history of STDs • Prevention of pregnancy.

MSM Meningococcal Outbreak
Outbreaks of serogroup C invasive meningococcal disease among men who have sex with men (MSM) have been reported in New York City, Los Angeles County, and Chicago since 2014. Since May 2016, nine confirmed cases of meningococcal disease, including one death, have been reported in men living in Southern California, most of whom were MSM. Healthcare providers should discuss the potential benefits of meningococcal vaccination (MenACWY) with MSM, particularly those who may be at increased risk of infection with Neisseria meningitidis.

Message from the Deputy Public Health Officer
 On June 12th, at the start of LGBTQ Pride month, we experienced the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. We are fortunate to have local organizations, like the Spahr Center, advocate and serve the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV/AIDS. Health care providers can also take action and create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment. The AMA, AAFP, ACOG, and AAP provide resources to ensure culturally competent and appropriate LGBTQ health care. Through our shared grief, I am hopeful that we can move toward compassionate and courageous action and build a healthy community for all in Marin.
