Dean's Message

Dear alumni and friends of the faculty,

Semester one has concluded and it’s been an amazing start for me. Getting to know alumni, current students, staff and industry partners has helped me to settle in quickly. I thank you all for making me feel so welcome.

One of the stand-out components of studying with us is the opportunity to gain global real world experience. Students from our Architecture, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture courses went to Venice last November to explore ideas and come up with solutions to redevelop unused land as part of the Seidler Design Studio. This one was called Venice Re-interpreted and was rich with history, culture, honing skills and making new friends. Hear from some of the students who travelled to Venice in this issue.

We are excited to announce Australia's first Landscape Architecture scholarship for Indigenous students. Many thanks to Arcadia Landscape Architecture for helping us to address the under representation of Indigenous practitioners in the Australian landscape architecture industry. In my experience working with Indigenous practitioners on design projects brings a different sensibility and perspective, increasing the integrity of a design response. Going forward, if Australian landscape architecture studios are to be engaged globally, it will be crucial for Indigenous practitioners to have a central role in the industry, as they do in other countries, such as New Zealand.

Congratulations to our recent graduates on all your hard work and commitment, welcome to UNSW Built Environment's alumni community.

Thank you again for helping me to feel so welcome and I look forward to seeing you at one of our many upcoming events, especially our Utzon lectures.

Best regards,

Professor Helen Lochhead,
Dean, UNSW Built Environment
