July 2016

To self-publish or not to self-publish? That is the question!

Following on from her recent talk at the archives, Hazel Edwards has the answer...

We've been pleased to welcome Hazel Edwards to the Victorian Archives Centre twice over the last few months to teach us all about writing ‘non-boring’ family histories and memoirs. Here she answers some additional questions for those of you considering publishing your life story.

And if you missed out on either of Hazel's talks here in North Melbourne, be sure to visit the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre later this month to see Hazel present as part of their Author Series.

How to write a 'non-boring' memoir

Some of the top tips to come out of Hazel Edwards' June talk at the archives

1. Could you use a unique format for your memoir? Think outside the box.

2. Your title is extremely important. Don’t call your story ‘my memoir’ or ‘my story’. You need to be original and make people WANT to read it!

3. Anecdultory: use interesting anecdotes but not necessarily in chronological order.

4. Your memoir needs conflict. This can be within your main character, between characters, their physical surrounds or a challenge they need to overcome.

5. Be diplomatic and kind, consider the impact on your family when writing and remember, this is simply YOUR version of events.
