Adviser to the Disability Discrimination Commissioner The Australian Human Rights Commission is seeking to fill the vacancy of an Adviser to the Disability Discrimination Commissioner at an APS5/APS6 level. The Adviser is responsible for the provision of advice to the Commissioner/President on disability issues both in a domestic and international context. The uni virtual clinic: changing the way mental health care is provided to young people at university  This research looks into the uni virtual clinic (UVC), which is a comprehensive online service developed in partnership between the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University (ANU) and the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre that has been designed to prevent and treat mental health problems and related issues in university students. AHRC: Assistance animals and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth)

Exploring the Retention and Success of Students with Disability (NCSEHE) A new report funded by the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) finds students living with disability should be given the opportunity to more accurately disclose the nature of their disability to universities.  Led by the University of Tasmania’s Professor Sue Kilpatrick, the research explored data collected by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training, and analysed the success and retention rates of students with different categories of disability.  The report has resulted in the development of a set of guiding principles for future discussion and consultation across the disability sector, with a view to supporting a good practice approach in higher education institutions.  (Sue Kilpatrick, Susan Johns, Robin Barnes, Darlene McLennan, Sarah Fischer and Kerri Magnussen)  View this article »

Disability Standards for Education practice exemplars  In the 2015 Review of the Disability Standards for Education, stakeholders indicated that more awareness needs to be made on how to implement the Standards in practice.  The development of a series of Practice Exemplars resulted from one of the recommendations in the 2015 Review. The ATEND Pathways Conference is a bi-annual event organised by the Australian Tertiary Education Network on Disability (ATEND). The conference brings together disability practitioners, NDCOs and a range of other professional, academic staff and students with disability to identify and remove barriers for people with disability participating in higher education and training.

Pathways 13 centres around the theme; Changes, Challenges and Choice – embracing the future. The Pathways 13 conference will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Pathways in Australia. Exploring the past 25 years will enable us to look back since the first Pathways Conference in Geelong in 1991, and explore Changes in the field of higher education and training for people with disability and look forward to the Challenges and Choices of the future.
