"Restoring humanity to life"
June 2016
19th Annual ISEPP Conference, Portland, Oregon, October 7-9, 2016
I am again reminding everyone about our 2016 conference, "Individuals Matter: Building a Better Science for Psychology and Psychiatry". The conference will address how traditional scientific methods and so-called "empirically-supported treatments" have failed to give useful information in helping those who struggle with very difficult life challenges. Because such science relies greatly on standardization, quantification, and nomothetic statistical analyses, the research results are based on and only apply to averages. They wash away the meaning of individual lives and turn people into caricatures. We need to bring the individual back to center stage. Go here to register for the conference.
Start making your travel arrangements and reserve your hotel room now by clicking here or by calling 800-586-5455. Use the group code "XIS" or mention the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry in order to qualify for the special conference room rate. Remember, ISEPP members will get a discount on conference registration fees so I highly encourage you to join us prior to registering for the conference.

The ISEPP Inquiry
As part of our continued effort to enhance our website, we are launching an online interview series called "The ISEPP Inquiry". This will be a shortened 60 Minutes type of format with one of our dedicated members, Michele Paiva, as the host. The series will showcase a variety of issues, especially ones that are getting national attention. I was honored this week to kick off the series by talking about the upcoming conference and the videos will be uploaded soon to the Events & Features section of our homepage. I'm asking those of you who have particular expertise in a topic germane to ISEPP's mission to let us know you're interested in being interviewed. To do so, go to
http://www.michelepaiva.com/isepp.html. Topics can include autism, ADHD, violence, or any other issue that people are being misled about in the public arena. This series will be an audio-visual counterpart to our printed "In The News" section on the website.

Membership
I also want to remind everyone that we have a calendar year membership cycle - January to December each year. In December we will send out reminders about renewing your membership for 2017 and we always encourage those of you who are not members to join here. Remember that a large part of your cost of membership goes to publishing our peer-reviewed journal, Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry (EHPP). When you join, not only do you receive upcoming editions of the journal, but you also gain online access to all past and future editions. This means even if you join partway through the year, you will still get you money's worth for that year. If you have any questions about joining, contact our Membership Chair Robert Sliclen, Ph.D., at sliclen@optonline.net or 201-664-2566.

Looking for Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to help us in our fight against the inhumane mental health industry. In particular, our Membership Committee and Research & Public Education Committee need people to help reach out to the public in order to make people aware of us and to join our ranks. There are thousands of people out there who share our views but who have never heard of us. I have met people who react with refreshing hope when they find out about ISEPP. Those of you who are internet savvy and understand research design, methodology, and analysis would be especially helpful. If you are interested, contact me at docruby@me.com or 301-646-6022.

I ask that you all share this newsletter and other ISEPP information through your social networking sites. Also, make sure to visit our Facebook and Twitter pages. Feel free to contact me at docruby@me.com or 301-646-6022 if you have any questions or suggestions.

Best wishes,

Chuck

With the horrible mass shooting in Orlando this month, we must remember what typically happens after these disasters. There are those, especially in Congress, who are screaming at "mental illness" as the culprit and they are using this tragedy to call for extra measures to not only keep guns out of the hands of the so-called "mentally ill", but also to provide "treatment" to those who have been diagnosed. While reasonable gun control measures might be needed, a diagnosis of "mental illness" does not increase one's risk of using guns to commit violence. Further, the "treatment" they talk about ends up being coercive and involuntary in the form of psychiatric drugs, ECT, "assisted outpatient treatment", and hospitalization. We must continue to be on guard against this form of inhumanity.
