Recognizing Ability
Every now and then, The Open Door comes together with a perfect theme. This week everything centered around abilities. One of our stories introduces Emily Krabill, an inspiring self-advocate, who spends time blogging and helping people understand what it's like to live with Down syndrome. She flipped the script on me when I was interviewing her earlier this week. I asked her about her disability, and she stopped me short with a statement that left me wanting to stand up and applaud. Of course, you'll have to read the story to find out what she said.
But Emily left me thinking, it is so important to focus on ability and give each person we serve a platform to advocate for themselves. We accomplish this through our group homes, day services, employment services and guardianship programs, to name a few, but we are going to give Emily more of a chance to teach us by sharing her blog on our social media platforms.
How have you been challenged to think about abilities? When has an ADEC client challenged you to look at people with disabilities in a whole new light? Let me know! I'd love to hear your stories. This is your Open Door.
