Welcome to the SpringE

From the Headmistress

Dear Parents

I do love the build up to the end of Term. While there is a lot going on, so much of it is great fun and you really can see how much progress the children have made over the year.

It was lovely to see so many of you at our 'Meet The Teacher' afternoon on Thursday, followed by a picnic and Pimms on the lawn. I enjoyed watching the children run around and having fun whilst parents chatted.

I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a dry Saturday and Sports Day. If the weather is inclement we will text you at approximately 9.00am to let you know and follow the wet weather plan.

Next week also sees our end of year performances, 'The Ginger Bread Man' for our Nursery and 'The Enormous Turnip' for Dragonflies, Year One and Year Two. Both promise to be their usual blend of talent, vibrant performances and certainly have a high 'cute' quota.

Wishing for a dry, warm and fun weekend full of sporting endeavour, fun with our stalls and games and enjoyment of cakes and strawberries as well as picnics.

Laura Brown

Move Up Day
Year Six spent an exciting morning at the Senior School yesterday for their induction morning.
Everyone enjoyed the lessons and made some new friends.

Luc: History and Maths are not my best subjects but these lessons were exciting.
Jasper: I loved the DT room with the cool machines and the food was good.
Sian: I really enjoyed the treasure hunt using the compass.
Harry: Making real clocks in DT was great.
Lily: It was all exciting.

Master Chefs
This week, Year One finally put all of their learning about algorithms and instruction writing into practice by performing as TV Chefs. The children gave simple step by step instructions on how to make a rainbow fruit kebab as they were recorded on an iPad. They all did a fantastic job and they even looked the part with their amazing chef hats. It was lovely to see the children combining their ‘Fighting Fit’ topic and Science work with Computing skills.

It has been a busy and exciting week in the Dragonflies. On Tuesday we were kindly invited to Benedictos Restaurant by Mr Pantaleo as part of our topic 'All Around the World and the 2016 Olympics'. We enjoyed making our own pizzas, rolling and stretching the dough and then adding our favourite toppings. It was fun to see the pizzas cooked in a flash in the special oven - they were delicious. Afterwards, we enjoyed yummy tiramisu (alcohol-free of course) and we all had a great time eating in the restaurant. We were all tired after the scenic walk along River Severn back to School.

On Thursday for our final swimming lesson we took part in a terrific Olympic style competition, where we enjoyed various exciting races. The children all won a medal for their efforts and great successes. Mrs Kelleher and Miss Bennett were thrilled to see such progress made this year.  Well done, Dragonflies.

Bikeability

Year Five and Year Six have been taking part in Bikeability this week. They have learnt how to control their bikes safely as well as going out and about on the roads around Springfield. They have practised manoeuvres at junctions, moving around obstacles and traffic awareness. Well done to all those who took part.

Secret Gnomes Find Homes
I can now reveal that the secret painting that was taking place in Brownies a couple of weeks ago was our Father's Day Gnomes.  Hope all the dads who received one have put it somewhere very safe.

Rounders Roundup
It has been a busy week of Rounders at Springfield.

On Tuesday the Under Eight girls played a friendly match against RGS The Grange. Both teams fielded very well but were let down by their batting. Springfield narrowly lost 7 1/2 to 10. Our Under Nine Rounders team played a friendly training fixture against RGS The Grange. We played one inning of 30 good balls and Springfield fielded first. Abigail Miller bowled extremely well and Millie Street threw the ball effectively to Lucy Whiteley to get players out. RGS The Grange batted well to score 7.5 rounders. Springfield started well with Millie and Abigail both scoring. All the girls enjoyed the game and learnt lots about the rules and tactics ready for future matches. Following the game, Springfield played host to a mixed Under Ten team from St George's RC.  It was great to see the boys playing rounders with the girls. Springfield showed some slick fielding, getting lots of batters out at first post and won the game 12-6. Player of the match was Daniyal for his impressive catching. A Under 11 mixed (girls and boys) team also played St George's. After the first innings we were ahead by five but St George's batted well in the second innings. With our four boys out on their first bat, Sian Gaynor-Smith, Kitty Smith, Holly Leek and Maddison Brown all batted extremely well to stay in for the full innings and lead the game to a 12.5-10.5 win.

On Wednesday the Under Ten girls travelled to Kings St Alban's.  The match was extremely close and both teams fielded efficiently.  Samantha Ralph and Theodora Hall batted strongly and Springfield were unlucky to lose by only half a rounder. Well played to all teams this week.
