North Carolina AD Cunningham says his department will submit a response to the NCAA's latest NOA within the next month. Overall: "I think we have positive momentum going. I think we have more confidence. I think our campus community has healed and is continuing to heal. . I think there's also some anxiety about what the future holds, but I don't think it's nearly as acute as it was 24 or 48 months ago." More: "It's been a challenging time; many of our coaches have talked about it. I think we're really at the very back end of that now. So they have weathered the storm very, very well. To have that kind of performance, it's really encouraging about our future, too." Amid the controversy, the Tar Heels had a banner competitive year with stand-out seasons from Men's & Women's LAX, MBB, FB & Field Hockey that led to another Top 10 Learfield Directors' Cup finish. - link
Baylor & former FB HC Briles have officially parted ways. From the university: "Both parties acknowledge that there were serious shortcomings in the response to reports of sexual violence by some student-athletes, including deficiencies in University processes and the delegation of disciplinary responsibilities with the football program. Baylor is addressing these shortcomings and making ongoing improvements." - link
$579,190.59. That's the amount former Texas A&M AD Hyman received from the university after his exit earlier this year. Hyman's departure was technically "without cause" according to records obtained by the Dallas Morning News. His base pay in College Station was set at $800K for a contract that originally ran through July of 2017. - link
The Pentagon reports that former Air Force superintendent Lt. Gen. Gould erred in not allowing FB HC Calhoun to be interviewed during an investigation into behavioral misconduct by student-athletes earlier this decade (the aftermath of which led to former AD Mueh's departure), despite speaking to Calhoun being "a logical investigative step." The academy was cleared on allegations of special treatment for a FB student-athlete, and current superintendent Lt. Gen. Johnson emphasizes that "the report concluded that there is no systemic problem here; and therefore did not make any recommendations for the academy." - link
Reduced Conference USA TV monies & the introduction of cost of attendance will make the upcoming fiscal year a challenging one at Louisiana Tech. AD McClelland: "It’s going to take a lot of hard work from certainly our coaches and administration and certainly our fans and donors. We’ll be asking more for them as we continue to have success and want to continue to have success in order to get us through these tough times." A new deal with Adidas should save $50K & an extension with Learfield includes a $650K guarantee. McClelland would like to see LTAC membership revenue grow from $1.4M to 1.6M or $1.7M. Notes success for a number of teams on the field that should bode well for fans contributing to continued progress. - link
Quick to credit the generosity of Bulldog Club members, Mississippi State AD Stricklin talks the never-ending cycle of facility upgrades, which has seen MSU spend nearly $140M since 2010 and could see another $150M over the next decade. Stricklin points out that facilities are a primary lens through which people assess commitment to a program, and, to that end, MSU has selected architects to preplan future updates to Davis Wade Stadium (east side and south end zone) & Humphrey Coliseum (fan experience). - link
Facilities are also top of mind at Utah, even though the Utes have marked off some key projects of late. AD Hill: "There's always something on the list." Baseball & Golf are two programs that could use some upgrades with plans in the works. Other enhancements could include expansion & modernizing of the Burbridge Academic Center, revamped locker rooms for Olympic sports & more work at Rice-Eccels Stadium. - link
North Dakota State Prez Bresciani says his athletics program is positioned exactly where it needs to be, "We’re what college athletics ought to be like, versus what oftentimes it becomes when you go to the next level and it becomes more of a business orientation of resources. The money involved makes it irresistible to treat it like that." Notes recent FB game deals that will see the Bison take on FBS squads & predicts the industry's alignment future, "...within the next five years we’re going to see some things happen in the BCS and the big five leagues that will ripple throughout Division I college athletics. I don’t know what that is, so it’s hard to predict what NDSU would do...we want to be at the second-highest tier of Division I, whatever that is...That’s our sweet spot." - link
The Great Alaska Shootout, run by Alaska-Anchorage, has tasked Basketball Travelers Inc. with final scheduling details of the 2016 & 2017 tourneys. Two teams are still needed for the '16 edition. BTI will be paid $7.5K for each school that ranked in the Top 175 of last year's RPI & can earn a $10K bonus for a squad from one of the top six leagues in the NCAA. Overall, BTI could get up to $35K for this year with future financial details still being negotiated. - link
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Brexit's impact on sports: The NFL has three regular season games scheduled for London during the upcoming season & says it's monitoring the situation, but some believe Britain's decision could slow the NFL's push into Europe (link); Free movement of labor is essential for the English Premier League & there's angst on how the 'leave' vote will impact foreign players, 432 EPL players from last season may now need a work permit (link); Devaluation of the pound will have an impact on a number of entities, most notably Formula One when it holds an even in Austria next week (link).

HC moves: Jacksonville moves quickly and promotes baseball AC Hayes, a former JU student-athlete, to HC. Per AD Ricker-Gilbert: "[Hayes] is going to give everything to this program because it means so much to him. He’s JU through and through" (link); Vermont hired native daughter and current Notre Dame AC Dalton as its next WLAX HC (link); Liberty baseball HC Toman, the 2nd winningest coach in program history, unexpectedly resigned after nine seasons at the helm (link); Interim Wichita State AD Boatright hires LSU AC Bryan to take over the Shockers Men's Tennis program (link).
While he doesn't think "this is going to jumpstart a revolution," CBS Sports Norlander wonders about the future decision-making processes of highly-touted PSAs, as he examines the draft night fortunes of Milwaukee Bucks 10th overall selection Maker (who went to prep school instead of enrolling in college) and former Kentucky student-athlete Labissiere (who slipped to 28th after being touted as a probable Top 5 pick a year ago). Offering that Labissiere was "punished" for his one year at UK, Norlander says "it would be smart business practice" for five-star recruits to explore the prep school possibility and not risk getting "exposed" against a higher level of competition. - link
With South Dakota State hitting its window to get a possible $30M-40M renovation proposal for Frost Arena in front of the state legislature this winter, AD Sell will look to hire an architect and identify funding sources prior to the Board of Regents October meeting: "The timing was the crucial part -- if you miss that window you have to wait a year. So once we get an architect hired we can start looking at what (the renovations) will look like and what some of the pieces might cost. That's when you can start tying it in with the fundraising and trying to get donors excited about it." Permanent seating is the top priority, followed by a hoops practice facility, and 3-mat wrestling component. - link
After a April proposal for a $225 student donation for FB season tix in the lower bowl was met with heavy opposition, Clemson has again tabled the discussions and will not charge students (who will endure hikes in tuition and room & board) for the tix. Per Asst AD for Communications Galbraith: "The no-cost piece was sent to students in May. We continue to have good conversations with student leaders about the entire ticketing process." - link
Idaho Statesman's Deeds rails against the "selective morality" of Boise State and the Idaho State Board of Education regarding alcohol sales policies at events. The State Board draws his initial ire, but BSU doesn't escape scot free, as AD Apsey is questioned for explaining why, per Deeds, members "of the county club" (i.e. those in the Stueckle Sky Center skybox) can drink during games, but "the average Joe" cannot. Deeds cites the NCAA approving alcohol sales at the CWS due to research showing alcohol-related incidents decline when alcohol is sold, ultimately declares that "beer will triumph in the end." - link
Dynamic ticket pricing debated around the still red-hot Hamilton in this Harvard Business Review piece. Pricing strategy consultant Muhammed argues recent levels for the show of $549 for premium seats & $139 for regular locations have resulted in "a paradise for scalpers." Resale marks are regularly in the $1K range with some options 3x or 4x higher & 10x for creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's exit from the cast next month. Hamilton will actually raise prices in 2017 to $849/$179-$199, but Muhammed thinks there will still be plenty of margin for scalpers. Lobbies in earnest for a dynamic pricing model that would marry demand with revenue. - link
Technology Today presented by Paciolan, Now Spectra, Ticketing & Fan Engagement
Fox Sports personality Travis goes in on why live TV content is the top dog right now in the context of the first show on HBO for Bill Simmons not getting significant viewership, but the Democratic sit-in in the House did. Travis is a major proponent of Periscope & Facebook Live, "Podcasts are great, but they've already been leaped by technology. If you're smart about media today, you need to add Periscope and Facebook Live to your list of TV and radio networks. TV everywhere has been a popular buzzword for the past several years, but I think that's a bit off, it isn't just TV everywhere, it's everything is TV. How else can you explain a live Periscope feed filling the entire live CNN screen last night?" - link

The final agreement to sell Turner Field to Georgia State is expected in a matter of weeks & new renderings have been released on what the university plans to do with the space. The current right field section of the facility could be replaced with a new bleacher section to run along the FB field. Two baseball field options exist, with one build in the same spot as the old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Demo and/or construction is still months away. - link
Miami (FL) has suspended FB student-athlete Young indefinitely for a violation of department rules & not being forthcoming with compliance during an investigation. As many as three other student-athletes are being investigated for violations similar to Young's (use of a luxury rental car without paying for it). One MBB team member was investigated, but cleared. UM has just a few months to go before its three-year NCAA probation is scheduled to end, while no findings on the current matter have yet been reported to the NCAA. - link
From the shoe & apparel world: Here's how Under Armour's Plank finishes every meeting, "'This is what I  heard.' 'This is what I think.' And, 'This is what we’re going to do.' I encourage all our managers to use that approach. It’s about making sure people’s voices are heard. Did I hear you? Did I understand your meaning? And then, clarity. My view on your opinion is the following, and therefore my actions will be the following. Everyone must have a voice, and everyone deserves clarity. Those things increase performance, satisfaction, and speed." More on Plank's leadership philosophy (link); WSJ's Germano on Nike's coming 2016 fiscal results announcement on Tuesday, "Analysts have adopted an unusually bearish tone toward Nike with at least four firms downgrading its stock within the past two months. Among concerns: whether Nike’s North American business can continue to post sales growth amid rising inventory and supply chain stumbles," more (link).
Really interesting reads on how the National Women's Soccer League's Portland Thorns have generated interest to the degree of 10,500 season ticket holders & an average attendance of 15,639, which is more than five NBA teams. City dynamics in Portland, ownership philosophy & marketing alignment all reviewed. Owner Paulsen: "With the growth of women's soccer, it has been the perfect storm recently. I think the time is ripe and I think people's interest has been piqued. It doesn't feel like this is just a bounce that came with the success of the World Cup. I think there's something bigger happening." - link, link
ElevenWarriors.com recaps Ohio State's extensive relationship with LeBron James and speculates what OSU's follow-up to AD Smith and HCs Meyer and Matta riding in the Cleveland Cavaliers victory parade will be. James and Cavs owner Gilbert have spoken on campus previously, while the Schottenstein Center could host another Cavs preseason game. Could we even see James "dotting the i" for one of OSU's FB home games? - link
Also noticed: Former New Mexico senior leader Cass is actually still on the payroll in Albuquerque has he has a two-year "professional consultant" deal with AD Krebs to help bring USTA events to UNM that will pay $23,776 annually (link); With College of Charleston hiring a new AD in the near future, this was an eye-opening read on the challenging drug culture in the city involving a number of former college students from the likes of CofC & The Citadel (link); The NHL opening up to Las Vegas leads to additional speculation for the NFL as billionaire casino magnate Adelson is pushing for deals that would likely benefit UNLV, as well (link, link); Eastern Kentucky has started "transformative" renovations for its Baseball & Softball facilities to be completed by next March & funded via agency bonds (link); Northwoods League summer collegiate baseball team the Battle Creek Bombers held "2nd Amendment Education Night" last night & encouraged fans to bring their guns to the game (link).
