SC16 Impact Showcase Seeks Real-World Apps of HPC

Organizations that currently employ high performance computing (HPC) to advance their competitiveness and innovation in the global marketplace can highlight their compelling/interesting/novel real-world applications at SC16’s HPC Impact Showcase. The deadline to apply for this program is July 31.

The Showcase is designed to introduce attendees to the many ways that HPC matters in our world, through testimonials from companies large and small. Rather than a technical deep dive of how they are using or managing their HPC environments, their stories are meant to tell how their companies are adopting and embracing HPC as well as how it is improving their businesses. Last year’s line-up included presentations on topics from battling ebola to designing a Rolls-Royce. It is not meant for marketing presentations.

Whether you are new to HPC or a long-time professional, you are sure to learn something new and exciting in the HPC Impact Showcase.

Presentations will be framed for a non-expert audience interested in technology, and will discuss how the use of HPC has resulted in design, engineering, or manufacturing innovations. The Showcase is open to all conference attendees with any type of badge.

Successful applicants will be notified in early September of their acceptance into the Showcase. Click here for more details.

Dongarra Shares His Assessment of World's New No. 1 Supercomputer
The release of the 47th TOP500 list of the world’s top supercomputers on June 20 at the International Supercomputing Conference in Germany showed a new No. 1 system: the Sunway TaihuLight machine in China that is nearly three times as fast and three times as efficient as the system it displaces in the top spot. The new system, located at the National Supercomputer Center in Wuxi, has a theoretical peak performance of 125 petaflops and achieved a performance of 93 petaflops running the LINPACK benchmark.

To get some perspective on the system and what it means for HPC, the SC Blog talked with Jack Dongarra, one of the four editors of the TOP500 list, a longtime member of the SC conference planning committee and one of the developers of LINPACK. Dongarra, who is a professor of computer science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a joint appointment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has a report on Sunway TaihuLight at http://bit.ly/sunway-2016.

Submissions Open for HPC for Undergrads Program

The Experiencing HPC for Undergraduates Program is now accepting applications. The program gives undergraduate students at the sophomore level and above an introduction to HPC research topics and techniques. The program introduces various aspects of HPC research at the SC16 conference to participants to give them a better understanding of opportunities to perform research as an undergraduate and potentially in graduate school.

The program covers travel expenses for students to attend SC16, including registration for the full SC16 Technical Program. Read more.

The deadline to apply is Friday, July 15, and applications must be submitted using the SC16 submissions page.

Poster & Student Research Competition Poster Submissions Due by July 15
