New ‘Straight On’ Green Light Arrows on Whitley Bridge
We’re pleased to report that the green traffic lights off Whitley Bridge have now been changed to ‘straight on’ arrows. Roger had contacted highways to inform them that vehicles were driving the wrong way down the Leaf Lane one-way system, as there was no signage to say otherwise. Hopefully these new light should now help to prevent that.

Cheylesmore Residents’ Parking Scheme Update
Roger Bailey has been informed by Coventry City Council officer Karen Seager, Head of Traffic and Networking Management, that the review into the Cheylesmore Residents Parking Scheme is due to be completed by September this year. The review covers all the streets currently in the scheme and includes those who have submitted petitions:- The Hiron; Benedictine Road; Glover Street and Lichfield Road.

Whitley Residents – Important Meeting
Wednesday, July 13th at 7pm at Whitley Community Centre
From Doug
We'll be welcoming two key City Council officers who have particular responsibility for the Whitley Primary School’s site which will undergo extensive redevelopment over the next 15 months, namely:-
                       Judith Applegarth        Education strategy manager
                       Martin Purdue             Site project manager
They'll be able to give us a progress report on the current state of the planning process along with some idea as to the likely demolition & building programme. No doubt, they'll also invite your questions.

This is an opportunity not to be missed by all who share a concern for such an important community project.
Any who've not yet managed to support these neighbourhood meetings will be especially welcome.

Petition for Safer Crossing from Asda to Daventry Road Shops
Roger received the following update with respect to this petition from Karen Seager, Head of Traffic and Network Management:
A pedestrian vehicle count has been conducted at the above location, which indicated that a crossing would be justified. However, at present, the City Council does not have sufficient resources to satisfy all of the numerous requests we receive from residents across the city for traffic calming and other road safety measures. As a consequence, works are prioritised based upon casualty reduction.

In Coventry, requests for traffic calming which meet the relevant criteria are normally considered for inclusion in one of two road safety programmes, namely Local Safety or Perceived Safety. Sites where there have been six or more personal injury collisions reported to the police in the last three years are considered for a local safety scheme. An analysis of personal injury collisions shows that there has been one such collision at this location in the last three years. Therefore, it does not meet this criterion.

Perceived safety schemes are considered in response to community concerns. Due to the limited funding, these are also prioritised. I can confirm that the above location will be added to the perceived safety scheme list and considered for inclusion in a future year’s capital programme.

However, perceived safety schemes are subject to a budget cap of £20,000, so an enhanced crossing near this location would be subject to additional external funding being identified.

Travellers Return to Coventry War Memorial Park
Four caravans moved onto the main car park off Kenilworth Road after one of the new bollards was removed so they could gain access.

Whitley Bridge – Illegal Left Turn
After Roger reported to officers the number of drivers making an illegal left turn, the green lights at the top of the slip have been replaced by ‘turn right’ arrows.

However, we’re not sure if this will deter many of the drivers making this manoeuvre.

We’ll be carry out another survey shortly.

Abandoned Car in Thomas Landsdail Street
Roger has been approached by a resident in Thomas Landsdail Street, about a car that has been there for about 6 weeks. The car is not taxed, insured or MOT’d this has been checked on web site. Children are using this car to play on, jumping on the roof and bonnet.

Drivers to Get Refund for Driving Through Park Road Bus Gate
Hundreds of motorists fined for driving through a city centre bus lane are in line for a refund because the traffic signs were not properly authorised.
A technical error by the Department for Transport (DfT) means around 1,780 drivers who were caught driving through the Park Road bus gate, near Coventry Railway Station, will be able to claim their fines back.
The council will refund any motorist who they fined in ‘good faith’ between December 10, 2015, and April 21, 2016.

Drones – What are the rules for flying them?
In parts of Coventry drones have been spotted & residents have asked where can / can’t drones be flown.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sets the rules on drones in the UK under what is called an air navigation order.
  • An unmanned aircraft must never be flown beyond the normal unaided "line of sight" of the person operating it - this is generally measured as 500m (1,640ft)horizontally or 400ft (122m) vertically
  • An unmanned aircraft fitted with a camera must always be flown at least 50m (164ft) distance away from a person, vehicle, building or structure
  • An unmanned aircraft fitted with a camera must not be flown within 150m (492ft) of a congested area or large group of people, such as a sporting event or concert
  • For commercial purposes, operators must have permission to fly a drone from the CAA

Try the 'Socket Calculator'
Most people have extension leads in their homes, using 4-way bar adaptors to increase the number of appliances that they can plug into a wall socket.
However, although there is space to plug in four appliances, this does not mean it is always safe to do so.

You can avoid overloading sockets and risk of fire by following this simple advice and use the interactive overloaded socket tool from Electrical Safety First
