Making a painting...

Masterwork.
Chalking it out
Woman in an Armchair
Bryce Brown working with chalk and duster

Hand stretched canvas prepared with texture compound and burnt sienna

Hi <<First Name>>

I've decided to give you a behind the scenes look at how I make a painting, well at least how I'm making this painting. I'm not quite finished yet, but the response to postings from this one on social media has been tremendous. I'll publish the finished work on my website as well as Facebook and Instagram in the next week or so, all going to plan. And of course I'll let those on my mailing list see it first.

It's turning out to be a doozy! Enjoy..

The Critic
This fella was hanging around for a couple of days. You can really seeing these things watching!
Stage 1
I spend hours, days with chalk and duster getting things right with the drawing before I commit to paint...
Stage 2
Painted outlines are a more permanent guide for the rest of the painting...
Stage 3
Then I start then to fill in the background...
Stage 4
And the foreground...
Stage 5
Beginning on the face (detail)...
In the studio (also in progress!)
We're in the process of relining the shed, my new studio...
Stage 6
This is the result of a week's painting. Face, hands, clothing and hair. I've aimed to capture the impact of the graphic image in it's light and shade, but also to remember that this is a painting, keeping gestural movement and retaining imperfections with the brush.
Stage 7
More work on the clothing detail...
Stage 8
Painting the skirt, keeping with the monochrome/sepia feel of the work and the period...
Stage 9
Starting underpainting on the chair, building up light and dark to capture the refective surface of varnished wood...

Stage 10
Woman in an Armchair (near completion)
95 x 71 cm

Very near completion! It's all there, now I'll spend the next couple of days going over the painting, tweaking and adjusting things until I'm 100% happy.

A novel idea...
I thought as a novel idea, wouldn't it be great for the person who owns this piece to include something small, personal somewhere in the painting such as a brooch, pendant, or a word in the book? Something they know is there and others may miss unless it's pointed out to them.

This would have to be done before the varnish goes on, so there would be a time limit on this option. I'll be varnishing July 11th so have a think about this idea and let me know...

I hope you enjoyed watching the progress of Woman in an Armchair. Stay tuned to see the finished painting with a link to a big image with lots of detail!

Best,
Bryce.
