One Heart, One Humanity

The call to be of one heart and mind in union with Jesus speaks so clearly to the concerns of our times.

As the Church in Australia prepares to celebrate Migrant and Refugee Sunday, we recall that the Holy Family were refugees. To be in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to offer welcome. We think of the great hopes for the unity of the human family expressed through the United Nations and the European Union. We look with sadness on the fear and vilification of immigrants and those who do not share the dominant religion of their places of residence.  In response we commit ourselves anew to building up a culture of dialogue and encounter.

Migrant & Refugee Sunday - 28 August
How will your parish, school or community celebrate Migrant and Refugee Sunday?  The Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office has produced a kit full of useful resources to assist you.  It contains Pope Francis' Message for  the World Day of Migration and a message from Bishop Long, who himself arrived in Australia as a "boat person," and reflections on the implications of the Year of Mercy for policy and action.

The Migrant & Refugee Sunday 2016 Kit can be downloaded from the recently revamped ACMRO website.

A Culture of Dialogue & Encounter

“Interreligious dialogue, for it to be truly consequential for peace and development, should not be limited merely to leaders of religious communities, but must also extend as far as possible to all believers, since it is above all a conversation about life, which can lead to the meeting of hearts and minds.”

Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Intervention at the High Level Conversation of the UN General Assembly of Religions for Peace, 6 May 2016
