Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers

I had the pleasure of attending two school events recently that were very diverse but successful events.

On Friday night I attended the promotion- relegation netball game where our own Huanui Silver netball team played against Whangaruru to gain promotion to the premier grade for the championship round of the Whangarei netball season. The girls did not play a perfect game according to their coaches but did enough to edge Whangaruru in the final reckoning. It was great to see all the support for the team on Friday night. It has already been a high-achieving season for the team with them starting the season in College A1 grade, being promoted to and winning the Premier Reserve division and now into the Premier grade. Huanui College will join Whangarei Girls High School in the premier division and it is the first time that two College teams have been in the Premier Grade since the introduction of the Competition in the 1980’s.

This result is not a fluke and is down to a lot of hard work by all the players, coaches, manager and support of parents. Silver demonstrate those intrinsic team aspects, where they have a common purpose, everybody knows their role in the team and they openly support and encourage each other. We wish them all the best for the Championship round.

The School ball was held at the Whangarei Athletics Stadium on the 18th of June and has grown in size since the first Huanui Ball in 2013. The venue was beautifully decorated to reflect the Grecian Gardens theme. The dancing went all night and at one stage I feared the dance floor would not cope. A lot of kudos must go to the Ball Committee, Mrs Rudolph and Mrs Myburgh for organising a wonderful event and to the teachers and Year 10 serving staff for helping on the night. The challenge is laid down to next year’s Ball committee to raise the bar even more.

Your children would have received their examination marks this week, reports will be emailed out this Friday and Parent – teacher interviews will be held during the first week of next term. The reason we have exams is to give a very clear snapshot of how your child is achieving in each of the subjects they had examinations for and so that students have enough time to act on the feedback they get from the results of these exams before the external examinations in Term 4 for seniors.

I have outlined below some tips for students to take from the feedback they have received from the examinations:

1. Don’t panic
Remember this is a practice exam and don’t overreact to either a positive or negative result. It will however give the student an idea of the standard that is expected of them.

2. Listen to the Teacher
Some students may be happy with their grade even if their teacher believes that they can do better and vice versa. Teachers can suggest that students may be putting too much or too little pressure on themselves, but ultimately each student must set and strive towards their own goals.

3. Identify positives
Emphasising what they have done well is beneficial because they can take pride in their progress and stay motivated. Additionally, reminding them not to neglect a certain topic or concept just because they have performed well so far.

4. Identify negatives
Negative aspects of exam feedback are often most useful because they allow you to identify topics with which are problematic. Work produced in an exam situation is a realistic measure so exam feedback can illustrate areas that must be improved.

5. Make plans
Feedback is useless if it fails to inspire action. Spend more time on areas in which you performed poorly and less time on those in which you excelled, and ask teachers for their input in order to form a realistic plan of action.

6. Work with teachers
Feedback should motivate you to work harder in order to achieve your goals, so ask your teachers to work with you to make the most of this motivation.

7. Just do it
The three week holiday break should include some time to pick a topic that you might not have done particularly well in and revisit and review that topic.

HUANUI SUBJECT NEWS

Counselling

Huanui College now has a (visiting) counsellor available to support students to resolve a range of issues that have the potential to affect achievement and student well-being. Ellen Altshuler, a counsellor with 25 years experience, is now at the school on Thursday afternoons.

“Adolescence is a time when emotions can be huge, as young people begin to discover their identity and values, and develop independence. Social connections are enormously important. It is a joy to support Huanui College students to balance their high standards of academic achievement and the tasks of growing up,” Ellen says.

The new counselling service is one of the many ways that Huanui College provides a ‘whole child’ approach to learning.

Ellen is also available for private consultations with families and individual adults.  To contact Ellen phone 0274 383 844 or email: ellen@learningedge.co.nz

Project Possum

83 secondary students caught 60 possums and 5 rats at the recent Project Possum overnight camps held at Trefoil Park. Participants learnt about the biology and environmental impact of the possum pest and took on board new skills in possum skinning, trapping, hand and machine plucking – all towards NCEA credits. Thanks to NRC Biosecurity, Can Train NZ, Enviroschools and Te Aho Tū Roa who worked together to give the students authentic learning experiences.

Global studies

As part of the Global Studies programme, the year 7's, 8's and 9's, learned about global populations and housing as part of their workshop in the art room. They then each contributed a piece to create a collaborative installation of a cardboard city. Year 9 was in charge of the backdrop of a skyline complete with sunset. The tallest building was made by Max Stevens and the Sky Tower by Greg Hamlet. The result is colourful and full of suprises, for example; King Kong appeared on the tallest building.

Ki-o-rahi Challenge

Kia ora e te whānau, an awesome morning with 12 students attending the Ki-o-rahi Challenge as part of Northtec's Matariki celebrations.

Some of our students got to play against some of the Northland Taniwha team, we were also well looked after with kai (burgers and pizza).  Awesome manaakitanga Northtec!

Māori TV were there filming today so keep an eye out! More Matariki Celebrations coming up this week as we head off to the Planetarium and Museum.

CAREER NEWS – Vernice Young: Assistant Principal

The Year 9 students have been following a Careers Investigation programme in Term 2.  They have learnt valuable lessons about the importance of knowing themselves for effective subject and ultimately, career choices.  They completed various activities designed to increase their awareness of both themselves and the careers available in the workplace.

We are very cognisant of the fact that our students will be working in areas that have not yet been invented or even conceptualised, so we are instilling in them the value of acquiring transferable skills for their future lives. These skills include problem solving, organising, working to deadlines, leadership, negotiating, decision making and research skills.  Students and parents may note that many of our activities across the year levels over the past few weeks have included elements of these transferable skills; the Bubblegum project, the Humanities Global project and the BP Business Challenge.  To this end I attach a Careers Investigation checklist which your children can follow over the holidays.  Advise them to go through the investigation to find out about themselves and career options open to them. When they have completed the investigation have some discussions around the dinner table about your career – the highlights and difficulties – and encourage discussions with friends so that your children can make informed decisions about the future.  We will have an ‘Option Evening Presentation’ on Wednesday 10 August 2016 to talk about the option choices available at Huanui College.

Hochstetter’s Frog Habitat Characterisation

Collaborative research between Huanui College and University of Otago Frog Group.
Leiopelma hochstetteri is the most widely distributed species of all the native frogs of New Zealand. In this project we will explore habitat requirements between different populations of this species. Participants will attend a couple of brief introductions about native frogs and what methods scientists use to study them. Afterwards they will be asked to record specific habitat features of the border of a stream where the species occurs, using a metal quadrant and other instruments (e.g. GPS).

The Real Art Road Show

Last week, The Real Art Road Show came to Huanui College, which was a huge hit with the students. The on-board educator, Paul Forrest, inspired the students with his narrative about the work and encouraged them to participate in the discussion. The Roadshow is a free, not-for-profit organisation which travels around New Zealand. The truck ingeniously folds out into a proper gallery space, filled with about 60 art works. The collection features both renowned and emerging New Zealand artists and crosses a variety of genres including painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery and ceramic art. The Real Art Roadshow aims to give students an opportunity to be inspired, challenged and ‘wowed’ by the true scale, texture and colour of original artworks.

Auckland University School of Music Trip

On Tuesday, six of our students interested in Songwriting travelled to the University of Auckland where they were treated to a day of full on songwriting with top lecturers and graduates from the School of Music, Pop and Jazz section. The day started by meeting the team and students from other schools with some fun warm-up activities. Students were paired up and sent off to work with graduates who mentored the students with their arrangements and song lyrics. Students then got to work with an amazing rhythm section to rehearse and refine for the evening performance. Workshops on theory and stage performance were also conducted along with a talk from one of NZ's up and coming singer/songwriters Possum from the band Openside. Students then performed their songs in front of an audience with high tech sound, lighting and staging. Well done to Matariki, Kristin, Christina, Mana, Jacob and Merlia for putting your heart and soul into the workshops and writing some amazing songs. Keep going!

Alec Jackson Class 7U – Term 3 Alpine Ski Race Training

Huanui College has allowed Alec to continue his Race Training Programme for the fourth year based at Treble Cone Wanaka. Under the guidance of experienced Alpine Coaches, Jack Evans and Cameron Gunn, with assistance from Charlie Stocker, this committed training programme includes Slalom, GS and some Super-G race training.

Treble Cone’s seasonal training consists of a four day per week multi-disciplined training programme, both on the snow and with land based gym sessions. Competing in the very competitive male U12 section of the Southern Interfield series Alec is looking to improve on his performances of the last few years in this four race series.

Not forgetting his studies of course, Alec will be keeping in contact with his fellow students and teachers via regular email and also hopefully via internet Skype sessions.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Junk Free June Fundraiser

At Huanui College every student must complete at least 2 hours of community service during the year. So it’s only fair that the teachers do the same! On Friday night Mr Dodd and Miss Cebalo hosted a Junk Free June fundraising dinner to raise money for the Cancer Society. It was an amazing success with around 20 guests and we raised $550 in the process. Junk food is a major contributor to causing cancer so if you can please support the charity or take part in Junk Free June – it’s not too late! A big thank you to Huanui College for providing the venue, Infinity Events for supplying party supplies and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt for donating yoghurt for dessert.

Backpack challenge

Danielle Gorrie and Juliet Heaton participated in the 40 hour famine. They did 40 hours of the backpack challenge living outside in a tent and only eating what they had in their bag.

Supporting Huanui School: ANZ Olympic Schools Programme

ANZ has developed the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to inspire and motivate New Zealand's youth, through the magic and celebration of the Olympic Games.

The ANZ Olympic Schools Programme helps schools to give the next generation the confidence to strive to the best they can be: enriching their lives through the Olympic Values of Joy of Effort, Fair Play, Respect of Others, Pursuit of Excellence and Balance of Body, Mind and Character.

The programme provides schools with great resources, certificates of achievement, and letters of encouragement from ANZ Olympic Ambassadors.

How you can help
In addition to the great resources schools can receive, ANZ has also tailored the programme so the school community can help earn credits to spend at the ANZ Awards Centre and also secure the chance to have an Olympic Ambassador visit the school.

If you are planning to take out a home loan with ANZ, make sure you let you banker know you support Huanui School. For every home loan drawn down a school can earn credits to spend on items from the ANZ Awards Centre, items such as sports equipment or computers. As an example an eligible home loan drawn down by someone linked to your school to the value of $50k or more will entitle the school to 800 credits. 800 credits – that’s about $400 of spending power at the ANZ Awards centre.

You can find out more at anzolympicschools.co.nz or contact your local Branch Home Loan consultant, Sarah Webster on 09 2525810 or sarah.webster@anz.com
