Open data: helping you deliver better services

We've had a lot of exciting things happen in the open data space over the last month and more to come from our Open Government Information and Data Programme. Here are some of our highlights below:

  • Unlocking key datasets: A couple of weeks ago we released a key datasets survey and had a really great response with over 400 respondents and 61 comments asking for your say on what  datasets in New Zealand you'd like released as open data. See more below.
  • Taranaki Data Champion Workshops: Paul and Rochelle had a successful meeting with Taranaki local council data champions last week taking them through a series of workshops of how they can work together to make their data open. Learn more below.
  • Open Data Meetup Board Game Session: If you're in Wellington, come join our Meetup on 6 July (Wednesday this week) and learn to play the Open Data Board Game! Spaces are nearly full so make sure you RSVP here.

Thanks for your feedback!

With over 400 responses from our Unlocking Key Datasets survey, Weather, Water Quality and Property data were the top 3, highlighting the importance and value of public consultation. Once we've collected all the data we'll release the results as open data - see more details here.

Regional Data Champion Workshops

Paul and Rochelle hit the road for Taranaki last week to hold a series of workshops with South Taranaki, Stratford, and New Plymouth District and Taranaki Regional Councils' data champions.
It was a great opportunity to share the teams' experiences of working with central government agencies and helping champion culture change, while learning more about the challenges and opportunities for open data in local government.
We continue to be encouraged by the willingness by local government to embrace open data and eagerness to view it as a public asset to be made available for reuse and added value.
Next up, they're heading to the Manawatu-Whanganui region.
We haven't forgotten a request from the 'Far North' and will be looking to plan more regional workshops for Data Champions in the coming months.
Check out the Department of Internal Affairs ‘Beta’ version of their open data website, www.data.govt.nz, to gather feedback on how to shape the service.  If you haven't already -  have your say now by clicking on the image.

The 4th International Open Data Conference

The 4th International Open Data Conference will bring together countries from the northern and southern hemispheres in October 2016. The conference aims to set patterns and establish global open data collaboration
policies that allow a wider social and economic development.

Taking place on 6-7 October in Madrid, Spain, the conference will be an essential meeting point for the global community, a place for debate on the future of open data, its value in different fields, and the potential economic and social benefits it generates.
Rochelle from the Open Data Programme will be attending the conference, and contributing on behalf of New Zealand.
