MICHAEL 'PINBALL' CLEMONS HELPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH JUST GIVE
Over 25,000 pounds of food and $40,000 raised!
From left to right: Gail Nyberg (Executive Director, Daily Bread), Michael 'Pinball' Clemons
“One in three Canadians access the food bank at some point in their life – that’s a lot of us. In a country that is as rich as this…everybody should be able to eat,” says Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons, former Toronto Argonaut. “It’s an immediate impact. You give food today and someone eats it tomorrow. Most people need help for a short time, and then spend majority of their lives helping others.” On Wednesday, June 8, the Just Give campaign helped raise over 25,000 pounds of food and $40,000 to help ensure people have nutritious food during the summer months.

CITY'S BUDGET COMMITTEE CALLS FOR A 2.6% SPENDING CUT
On top of previous cuts to public health, housing and community programs
On Tuesday, Executive Committee at City Council met to discuss how to make ends meet based on the budget committee’s call for a 2.6 per cent spending cut. If it goes ahead, this will be the sixth consecutive year in which there will be budget cuts in a city which has the highest levels of working poor and child poverty in Canada. People are stretched to their limits due to rental costs – skipping meals in order to afford TTC fare to get to job interviews or doctors’ appointments. Food banks are bursting at the seams in areas such as Scarborough and Etobicoke while vital food programs in the city core continue to struggle with gentrification and higher rents themselves.

There is a widening gap between the have and the have nots in Toronto. City budgets that increase user fees and transit costs well above the rate of inflation, while keeping property taxes below the rate of inflation, only reinforce this widening gap.
