Refraction exhibition opening reception on June 10

July arts news

Dear friends,

Summer is now in full swing! Yes, we are patiently awaiting the completion of the streetscape improvements, but remain open for you to enjoy our current exhibitions, Refraction and Erik Neff Abstract Narratives. Or, come find that perfect handcrafted gift for a friend or just for yourself. Enjoy a movie next door at the Cedar Lee or (coming soon!) a glass of wine at the Cleveland Urban Winery! We are now open on Sundays for those of you who would like to take a leisurely stroll to the gallery after brunch on Lee Road, and take advantage of our Cedar Lee Sunday savings offer on your purchases. As always, we appreciate your generous support of our programming. We'll see you soon!

Yours,
Rachel Bernstein, Executive Director

Around, About. Brent Kee Young

REFRACTION
Glass Art through the Cleveland Institute of Art and Brent Kee Young

On view through July 30

REFRACTION gathers works by eleven artists who studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) during Brent Kee Young’s long tenure as professor and head of the glass department. The word refraction is loosely defined “as the change in direction of a propagating wave, such as light or sound, in passing from one medium to another.” In this exhibition, REFRACTION is a metaphor for how these artists have been illuminated and influenced by their study at CIA, as seen in their ensuing creative efforts. Spotlight: Erik Neff Abstract Narratives

On view through August 6

New explorations in abstract painting by Geauga county artist Erik Neff are now on view in the spotlight gallery space, adjacent to our main exhibition area. Working on a variety of surfaces such as plaster, wood, paper and slate, Erik creates a dialogue between expressive marks and geometric shapes through a "back and forth" process of scraping, gouging and applying pigments.

He notes about his work, “Like the process itself, the idea of an “abstract narrative” can be a state of contradiction or irreconcilability." MORE
