This is the weekly Newsletter for parents and carers of students attending John Hanson Community School.

Learning doesn't just happen in the classroom

At John Hanson we feel it is really important for students to leave us after 5 years not only with the best possible examination results, but having had experiences that they will remember into adulthood.

Nobody remembers the lesson they had on a dark wet February afternoon in year 8, but they do remember the time they were racing in a dragon boat with 17 other students at the Olympic Sailing Centre.

To this end both year 7 and 8 students have been 'memory building' over the last couple of weeks.

On Friday 25th June 60 year 8 students spent the day at Charlton Lakes taking part in canoeing, rock climbing, raft building and archery.

Some conquered their fear of heights, some got wet, but all had a great day.

87 year 7 students attended our inaugural outdoor activities residential weekend (1st-4th July), 4 days were spent at the PGL centre at Osmington Bay in Dorset.

Students had an action packed programme of events from Dragon boat racing, to sailing, to 'leap of faith'.

They also had to learn to live and work alongside each other and make lots of independent decisions.

I would like to end by thanking a superb group of staff for giving up their weekend to make sure the students had a trip to remember and the students for throwing themselves wholeheartedly into everything they did

STOP PRESS
We have just learned that Tom Hewson has won silver at the England Schools' Athletic Association Championships in Gateshead.   He made two amazing throws over 58m.  He is at the lower end of the age category so this is an amazing achievement.

He is now collecting his England kit for the UK competition!

Congratulations to Tom.

Year 10 Post-16 Taster Day
at Andover College

Year 10 students visited Andover College this week to experience taster sessions of a range of courses on offer to. Throughout the day our students took part in lessons that allowed them to try out new skills, find out how courses are structured, and what life is like learning in a post 16 college. Sessions ranged from formal presentations, to hands on practical activities, working in science labs, creating stop frame animations with ipads, working in a motor vehicle workshop, training in the football academy, and even creating a bridge of cardboard as a team event. Existing students at the college were acting as ambassadors for the day to answer questions and help our students to move around the college as they changed sessions.

The day gave our students an insight into post 16 education as they start to think about their future, and the courses they may wish to follow when they leave school.

Our thanks to Andover College for providing this opportunity for them.

Lost Property
Anything found in school which has clearly been lost gets brought to the School Reception.  If it has a student's name on it, it gets returned to them.  Un-named items of clothing go into a Lost Property cage by reception and students know to look there.

Smaller items are kept in reception awaiting collection.  As we approach the end of term there is a display of numerous small items which have been handed in this year but not yet claimed.  Students are encouraged to look at the display opposite the Squid machine.  It includes watches, necklaces, numerous keys and six pairs of glasses!
Traffic Management around Floral Way
Test Valley Borough Council have written to the school asking that a message is passed onto all drivers who use Floral Way.  The letter is reproduced after the Sports News section.

Year 5 Taster Day

On Tuesday 5th July we welcomed 170 year 5 students to John Hanson school to experience life at secondary school. Students participated in PE, technology, science and either drama, IT or art. Our staff were impressed with their maturity and  positive attitudes, and thoroughly enjoyed working with them! Thank you all for coming to visit us!

House 2 House
Charity Walk

Last year, as a school team we participated in ‘House 2 House’; a sponsored walk from Naomi House (for Jack's Place) in Sutton Scotney to Tedworth House (Help for Heroes) in Tidworth. There are 3 routes: 20 miles, 10 miles and 4 miles. Those who choose the 20 miles start at Sutton Scotney and walk the complete route.  The 10 mile option starts at the White Hart Hotel , Andover and the 4 miles starts at Kimpton finishing at Tidworth.

The 2016 walk is being held on Saturday 10th September.  This year we'd like to go bigger with a team of staff, students and parents all joining in!

Registration costs just £5 (which includes lunch and is payable through the website when you register) and you can then fill up a sponsorship form and either donate it directly yourself, or send it into us and we'll submit one donation from JHCS.

Everyone is welcome to join us; the more the merrier!

Please take a look at their website and register online: www.house2house.org.uk

If you could let us know by emailing anna.hall@jhanson.hants.sch.uk that you've registered, then we'll keep a tally of who from John Hanson is joining us.

Fund raising afternoon 2016
Tutor groups have been busy this week planning for our annual fundraising afternoon. This year we are raising money for two outdoor table tennis tables.

On Tuesday 19th July each tutor group has to run a stall/event to raise as much money as they can over lunchtime and period 5. Every year we have a great time; with some students selling sweet treats and drinks, sweet pong, cross bar challenge, face painting...the list goes on! Tuesday and Wednesday of that week will also be non-uniform. Payment of £2 will be collected throughout next week by our Prefect team.

Year 6 Transition day

This Tuesday 28th June we were delighted to welcome Year 6 to John Hanson Community School for their transition day.   At the very start of the day, we saw pupils looking a little unsure and anxious.  But by the end of the day their smiles and chatter told a very different story.

Year 6 spent the day in their new tutor groups, sampling a typical day and being cared for by our superb Year 9 Peer Listeners.  Science, Maths, English, Technology and Art were all part of the experience.  It was wonderful to see the Year 6 skilfully using the hand blenders in Food Tech - we were very impressed that the room did not end up plastered in biscuit dough!  The Art staff commented on the skill and creativity shown when working with clay.

The pupils, throughout the day and its activities, showed us how excited and ready they are for their next steps.  We are very much looking forward to them arriving in September and working with, and for them, through their secondary years.

John Hanson Country Dancing Festival 2016

Nothing could dampen the spirits on John Hanson School field as the rain threatened to pour down at the Andover Town and District Primary Schools Country Dancing Festival.

The live band and caller, Nigel Barrell, led the children in 10 dances, including the Virginia Reel, and Circassian Circle.

The festival has been an annual event in Andover for many years now. This year saw 500 primary school children from across the district come together for a celebration of dance.  The children ranged from as young as 5 years up to 11 years old and came from 13 primary schools.

They were joined by parents, siblings and grandparents for a picnic before the event, and then soaked up the atmosphere and ice cream and refreshments whilst watching the spectacular performances by the youngsters.

The event was fantastically supported by John Hanson Young Leaders who came back into school on our inset day especially to help out.  The Young Leaders were:  Mackenzie Washer, Shone Manoj, Mason Askew and Katie Haynes.  A huge thank you to them all.

Year 7/8 District Athletics report

This year’s district athletics proved to be another successful sporting event for John Hanson against the other Andover schools. Both year 7 and year 8 won the overall competition with particularly dominant performances from both boys teams.

On a rain affected day the majority of the events still ran and the weather did little to dampen the spirits of our young athletes. In the year 7 boys category there were impressive victories for Paddy Turner in the 1000m and Kyle Cooke in both the 150m and Shotput.

The year 8 girls showed a strong performance in the high jump with Hannah Taylor and Sophie Bates taking joint 1st. There were also victories for Kayla Smith in discus and Rebecca Robin in shot put.

There were also some excellent performances in the year 8 boys competition, most notably a victory for Ruben Hunt in the 100m final after finishing 3rd fastest in the heats. Kai Henderson claimed the title in the triple jump, Freddie Horner won the 800m with a very impressive performance and followed that up with a 2nd place in the Javelin to the eventual winner Sam Thomson.

All of the winners qualified for the County round next Tuesday in Southampton, and will be joined by Ella Henretty (year 7 2nd shot put), Lilly Robinson year 8 2nd 800m) and Caitlin Styles-Nicel (year 8 2nd 100m).

Well done to all of our athletes that competed at the district event.
