Letter from the President

Helping children (and parents!) manage change

Dear Friends,

How do we encourage our young children to feel comfortable with life transitions?

That’s a question I've been thinking about while my son, Bennett, attends Early Independence, a gentle separation program at the Museum. Like most parents, I was a little concerned he would get upset when left by himself. I also worried that he would try to run away from the group to play mini golf or ride the roller coaster (two of his favorite activities at the Children’s Museum).

Head Start at the Children's Musuem

Speaking with Raquel Barnes, Lead Teacher for Head Start at the Children's Museum

Raquel Barnes, far right, during Head Start's most recent graduation ceremony

The Children’s Museum of the East End is one of two museums in the nation to host a Head Start classroom. Since Head Start’s mission is to provide “support for the whole child, the family and the community” and “ensure all vulnerable children and families have what they need to succeed,” the partnership with the Museum is a perfect fit. We recently spoke with Raquel Barnes—the Lead Teacher since the Head Start preschool opened in 2011—and talked about how the partnership originated, the role it's played in her teaching, and the impact it's had on her students.

A Fond Farewell

Karin Keane, the Museum's Operations Director, hangs up her tape measure

After spending the last fifteen years working at the Children's Museum, Karin Keane is retiring at the end of the summer. She'll be splitting her time between Sag Harbor and Cambridge, Massachusetts (where she'll enjoy some much deserved time with family). During her tenure, Karin has seen the institution grow from a "museum without walls" to a thriving organization that not only welcomes over 65,000 visitors each year, but has become a vital part of the East End community. She was kind enough to sit down and recount some of her experiences from the Museum's early days, her role in helping to shape the exhibits, and the impact her time here has had on her life.
