There's No Place Like Home!
The SLED team, previously housed in a 150 sq ft office, recently relocated to District owned space on Juniper Street next to Madison Elementary. The space had been previously used by SLUSD administrators who are now housed in a location more central to downtown. The larger offices have allowed the Foundation to expand its programing including hosting eleven high school student interns over the summer. “We are extremely grateful for the District’s willingness to partner with us and provide this space" said our executive director, Morgan Mack-Rose. While the offices are being provided at no cost, SLED will continue to maintain its independence as a 501c3, community non-profit governed by its independent Board of Directors. A great big thank you to Oliver, Philip, Evan and Gordon Stanley along with Josh Neisse, all current or former Pirates, for their help with the move! The SLED office crew appreciate your volunteering--or being "voluntold", depending on who you ask!
SLED Board Elects New Officers
It was announced at the June board meeting that Deborah Cox, current District 1 Councilmember and SLED co-founder, is stepping down as SLED Board President, a role she has held for eight years . She leaves the board in the very capable hands of former Vice President, local attorney Sarah Galvin. Peter Oshinski, Vice-President, Marguerite Mazzitti, Secretary, Jill Raimondi, Treasurer and Christian Rodriguez, At-Large Representative complete the list of board officers. We thank Deborah for her years of dedication to SLED and are grateful that she will be staying on as a board member. Speaking of board members, we say farewell to Louis Haysteck and Michael Pretto who, after six years each, are leaving the board. Many thanks to these two gentlemen who have provided invaluable help brining SLED to where we are today. Wait...there's more! We welcome Juan Gonzalez III as our newest board member.
Meet The Interns!
INTRODUCING: Aira Espirutu is our graphics intern and Sally Nguyen our office intern. Valeria Ramirez, Olive Ocholonu and Axel Funes are working with the Summer School programs at Jefferson Elementary. Many thanks to AT&T whose generosity helped fund these positions. Lastly, Tai Nguyen, Grant Lima, Rubi Ramirez, Lilian Nguyen, Evan Stanley and Hanny Quach make up the Innovation Intern Team. This team has been tasked with designing a project based on the idea of "How does youth voice fit in with San Leandro's emerging identity as a hub for innovators and makers", using the fundamentals of Human Centered Design to assist them. Their project will be highlighted at the SL Tech Center grand opening to be held in October, 2016. SLED is grateful to the SL Tech Center for their generous funding of the Innovation Team.
