Chris Chats

Hard to believe it's July already and that's such a busy time for sewing bloggers since the invention of Christmas in July.  Flicky, my daughter has banned me from saying Christmas in July, "it's really not a thing Mum", well in the sewing community it very much is and I'm taking part in not 1 but 3 Christmas in July blog hops this year.  I'll share more info with you later.

Recent makes include #quiltsforpulse charity blocks and the release my reversible tote bag pattern in issue 2 of Modern By The Yard e-zine.

Squeezing in some friend time I recently met up with two quilting internet buddies and there have been more museum visits too.

QuiltCon 2017 and Quilters Take Manhattan (QTM) are two major events on quilters' minds at the moment and I've news to share about both with super exciting 'about me' news for QTM!

There's plenty more eye candy in my blog posts about recent trips to Pins & Needles and Purl Soho and I'll be asking for fabric store recommendations for a trip I've got coming up soon.

If you're happy to stick around, thanks for subscribing and let's do this together :D

MODERN BY THE YARD
Issue 2

The second issue of the brand new and FREE e-zine from Benartex called Modern By The Yard is now available and includes my free reversible tote bag pattern.

The tote has matching wallet and key ring clip accessories and the patterns for these will be made available shortly on the Benartex blog Sew in Love {with Fabric}.

The e-zine has many other projects and articles and I am delighted to see my blog featured on the Sewcial Media page.

QUILT INSPIRATION

This week at Wimbledon, the Duchess of Cambridge's sister Pippa Middleton was wearing an amazing orange and possibly lilac (it certainly doesn't look like a clean white to me!?!) striped dress that definitely would make a fab quilt design!  Reminds me of my Autumn's Golden Quilt - the technique 'how to' is free here on my blog.

MEET UPS

Here I am with Sarah Craig who blogs at Confessions Of A Fabric Addict, this was our first 'real' meet up having known each other 'virtually' for years.  We're about to work together on 12 Days of Christmas in July blog hop that Sarah's hosting - more about that later in the newsletter.

My second meet up is with Jess Skultety of Quilty Habit and author of The Wonky Press quilting newsletter.  Jess doesn't live too far from me in New Jersey and we've met before at the NJ Quilt Fest.  This time, we took our coffee and chat to Manhattan's Bryant Park.

My third and final 'meet up' and this time, I'm using the term quite loosely, was quite by chance when Flicky and I grabbed two seats at a bar in Manhattan.  After placing our cocktail order we realised we were sat next to someone you may recognise, none other than Susan Sarandon.  I'm not a 'can I have your autograph' kind of girl and even feel bad for taking this sneaky photo as I do believe celebs deserve to live their off-screen life in peace.  I can't resist sharing this with you, however, as I can confirm that she looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and what you see on screen is all real, she's stunning

My Turn To Ask You A Question...

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Yay, it's Christmas!!!  Well, not really but the fabric companies are releasing their Christmas fabrics and they're keen for us to start working with them straight away - the plus side for us is that we can get a lot of our gift making done in advance of December - well that's the idea!!!

This year I'm taking part in 3 blog hops and here are the details:

This blog hop is organised by Sarah @Confessions of a Fabric Addict. There are 25 bloggers involved and It's my turn on the 15th. Sarah will be hosting a daily Quilt Along and promises you too can have this festive quilt top with only 1 hour of work on each of the 12 days.

To give you a chance to get ahead of the game she shares the fabric requirements on here on her blog.

Week beginning 18 July it's Windham Fabrics Christmas in July blog hop.  Here's a sneak peek at the fabrics I'm working with.

Towards the end of July, I'm working with Benartex Fabrics again and here is another fabric sneak peek.

There will be giveaways involved in all the blog hops so keep an eye on my blog if you'd like to enter them as it's possible some of the giveaways may be over by the time I send out my next newsletter :D

READERS' QUESTION TIME
I often receive questions from readers either via email, Facebook, Instagram and blog post comments and it occurs to me that some of these questions and my answers to them may be interesting/useful to share with everyone here.

Q: What do you do with your scrap batting?

A: I keep all my scrap batting and have an evening now and again when I sit and sew all the scraps together to make giant Frankenstein'esque batting sheets.  Years ago I create a tutorial showing just how I do it - here it is.

I wouldn't use pieced batting for a competition or heirloom quilt or for a super special gift but I use it for all my other projects, quilts, cushion covers and more.

Do you have a question I might be able to help with?
Drop me an email and, if I can, I'll answer it here.

WHITNEY, NYC
I'm a member at the Whitney, I love the building and the exhibitions and early free entry, queue skipping and free lectures make my membership pay for itself many times over.  I'm currently attending the Learning Series Lectures Artist and the American City, 1920–1970 and loving it.

The photo above was taken in January this year at the Frank Stella exhibition - the view is of my apartment on the Hudson River.

I took lots of photos when I visited with Flicky last week and I'll share just a few of my faves from the Human Interests: Portraits From The Whitney's Collection here.  The exhibition continues through February 2017.
Three iconic photographs: Richard Avedon: Dovima with Elephants (above left), Sid Avery:James Dean (above right) and Robert Mapplethorpe: Patti Smith (below).  It was amazing to see these photographs as they were intended by the photographer and not in a book.  I was particularly taken with the portrait of James Dean as this image is actually blurred, the image is only in focus in the stitching on the collar and button flap.  I've never picked up that level of detail before.
Just look at these amazing paintings - that's right they're both paintings, hard to believe particularly of the one above.  I included some people in my photo to give a sense of scale - this is huge and you have to really study it to convince yourself it's actually an oil painting.  Rudolf Stingel: Untitled (After Sam).

And below is Chuck Close: Lyle - I love all of Chuck's work and those created using this method feel like quilts to me - I've included a detail pic so you can see what I mean.
The Great British Sewing Bee ended last week.  Don't panic, no spoilers here.  I loved every minute of it and the winner was very deserving.

Rather than add video links here that will suddenly disappear because they are pulled by the BBC I'll just suggest that you search "The Great British Sewing Bee Season 4" on YouTube, at the moment all episodes are there but they will be pulled when the BBC do their checks.

Registration for QuiltCon 2017 opened a couple of weekends ago.  I had my list of chosen classes at the ready and within 2 minutes of registrationopening I was confirmed for every one of my choices.  I'm almost embarrassed to admit it as I know the process didn't go too well for the vast majority and registration had to be closed for 5 days while everything was sorted.

I use EQ7 a lot and get pretty frustrated that I need to refer to the manual over and over again, it's just notuser friendly.  So I'm going right back to the beginning and taking every EQ7 class on offer and hoping to pick up lots of tips to turn me into an EQ7 Master!!!

Getting Started with EQ7  with Christa Watson
Paper Pieced Block Design with EQ7 with Amy Friend
Open Sewing - Saturday 10 am

So that's my QuiltCon 2017 schedule.  Will I see you there?  Are you in any of my classes?  Drop me a line and let me know so we can say "hi" :D
