Mystery Guest Coming!

Mo'Combo has graciously been invited back to Canaan's Tuesday Night on the Common concert series this year, and will be appearing on the bandstand with Scott Savioli of the Little Town Horns from 7pm to 8pm on July 12 ..... but enough is never enough, so we've gone one step bigger
and finagled an extra-special guest to join us, the likes of whom is rarely seen around these parts.

If you're a lover of saxophone-driven rhythm & blues, soul, swing and jump blues peppered with a little cajun funk, you'll want to be sure to make the Lions Club Concert on the Green this Tuesday!

RUMORS!
A number of people have been critical of highway workers working on non-highway projects. The Town has 7 full time workers in the Highway Department. Highway projects always come first. A two or three person crew is working fairly continuously on grading, and as that is done, another crew is working on spreading chloride on roads to keep the dust down. Another two person team will also be mowing roadsides. This summer most of the crew worked on changing the road profile and ditching and banks on Talbert Hill. Between April 1st and December 1st, there were a total of 9,720 hours worked by the Highway Department.

During the Spring, Summer and Fall, there are other occasional jobs for other Departments that come up. Each of these are approved by the Selectmen in advance and are undertaken to save another Department money. Most of the time these are done by one, two or three workers, and Bob Scott often does them on his own time.

This year, we delivered clean fill to the area by Canaan Hall that is managed by Canaan Recreation to create a level viewing area open to the public for the track and fireworks. This took a total 48 man hours. We also assisted the human services department by providing a client with clean fill for a trailer that took a total of 24 man hours. We moved benches and tables around for Recreation which took a total of 32 man hours. We used a total of 480 hours for filling and leveling the Autoware property for parking. A total of 40 man hours were used for Water and Sewer. About 40 man hours were used for the roads and parking areas around the Fire and Police Station. During the remainder of the season, approximately 430 additional man hours will be used for Water & Sewer (300), Transfer Station (90) and Recreation (40). The total for the whole year is about 1,094 man hours or 11%. It is not unusual for other Departments to work with Highway. Typically Water and Sewer, Transfer Station and Government Buildings all contribute time. This cross use of manpower saves the town an average of $30 per hour after paying for the Town employee or about $33,000 a year.
Selectmen will meet at the Canaan Meeting House starting Tuesday, July 5, at 6 PM and will continue the first and third Tuesdays through August 15th.

Autoware - another chapter.

Once we had removed Autoware, GeoInsight - a consultant to the the Town and the State, used the removal as an opportunity to bore test samples from one end of the property to the other. Previously, there was no access under the building for test borings. As a result of the process a hot spot with petrochemicals was discovered under the front edge of what used to be the office area. The State, under the guidance of GeoInsight, will undertake a clean up of this area during the next two months. The cleanup anticipates the removal of 270 tons of contaminated soil. The cost of this clean up is covered by a remediation bond that has been on the property from the time that the Wares owned the property. There is no cost to the Town. When clean, the parking lot will be restored to its current appearance. Once the project is complete, the lot will be paved in 2017.
