Have you met Noa?

Noa is the mascot of EIJ and represents the spirit of the Jamboree, which is the coming together of thousands of Scouts, Guides, their Leaders, and volunteer staff from across the UK and the world.

Noa will be with you to share in the Essex International Jamboree experience of a week of fun and adventure.

Noa loves sharing new experiences with friends and making new ones too. As a participant, leader or staff you will be joining Noa on an exciting journey to Essex International Jamboree. At the event, you will see Noa in various places across the Jamboree, programme and the site including the event logo that is everywhere!

Find out more about Noa’s story, and first experience of a Jamboree in 2012 click here: Noa Story 2012

For everything you need to know and so much more …

For everything you need to know about the Jamboree, the site, activities and what’s in store, please see our Handbook. Every Group will be provided with 2 copies of the Handbook when you register on arrival with our Subcamp Team so there's no need to print anything.

Lists, lists everywhere!

We know how hard it is to remember everything so we’ve provided a handy Checklist for you to download and print.
What do you need to do?
  • Look at our online Handbook (no need to print as paper copies are provided on arrival)
  • See our Checklist to help you remember what to bring

Some key points to remember about Programme

You need to make sure your participants have the right clothing for activities

As you will be aware some of the programme zones require specific clothing.  We have therefore put together this simple Clothing Guide for you to share with your participants so that they can take part in the activities.  Some of these are compulsory for safety reasons.
What do you need to do?
  • Download the Clothing Guide
  • Share the clothing Guide with your participants and parents

Saturday is Discovery Day

On Arrivals Day, we are holding a Discovery Fair between 14:00 & 17:00 for all participants to find out more about the programme zones (if they’d like to).

Once you have finished setting up camp and you’re happy for your participants to explore the site, please direct them to the Village Green where they will be able to collect their Quiz Sheet from a friendly marshal.

NB: If your participants can't attend the Discovery Fair don't worry as the crafts will be available in the Craft Barn after the Opening Ceremony.
What do you need to do?
  • Share our Top Ten Tips with your participants before they head to the Discovery Fair:
  1. Bring a pen or pencil
  2. Complete the crafts
  3. Take part in the pop-up activities
  4. Answer the discovery questions
  5. Find the hidden word, by finding the 5 letters around the Fair
  6. Talk to the Programme Team
  7. Ask your own questions
  8. Meet new people
  9. Make new friends
  10. Enjoy discovering about the exciting week ahead

Programme Zone 1 - Express Yourself

In advance of attending Express Yourself Zone, we’d like your Young People to think about which group they’d like to be in.  Each group will complete three mini workshops:
  1. Group A: Television, dance and photography
  2. Group B: Radio, drama and drumming
  3. Group C: Journalism, singing and fitness
What do you need to do?
  • Discuss the Express Yourself options with your participants, so that they all have a first and second choice ready on the day they take part.

Programme Zone 11 - EIJ Presents

As announced in the last newsletter our EIJ Presents audition site is now open.

The time has come for participants to share their talents with the rest of the world. Participants can audition online - just follow the guidance on the EIJ Website how to be Part of the Show and we will take it from there. The Subcamp heats will take place in one of the Early Evening sessions, culminating in the Grand Finale on the Friday in front of the whole Jamboree.
What do you need to do?
  • remind participants about the online auditions and share the link
  • deadline for submissions is 21st July 2016

Programme Zone 12 - Tastes of the World

It looks like many of you have been spending time practising your Tastes of the World dishes, and we look forward to tasting the results. Please do remember to complete and display the allergies card when sharing your food.
What do you need to do?

Be Inspired, try new things, meet new people, make this event even bigger and better

In order to ensure the smooth running of the Jamboree we rely on our army of staff volunteers. As with any event of this size, there is always room for additional help and we would like to invite Group Leaders to get involved by volunteering an hour or two.

Each day we will be advertising via Subcamps jobs and timeslots where additional help will make all the difference.  Group leaders are encouraged to please sign up with times when they can help and the Subcamp Team will have details of how to make contact with the relevant Team Leader.

If every adult leader onsite volunteered just 2 hours with us we would fill 3,400 hours - 141 days!

To start us off, our current opportunities are in Zone 30: Camp Fire's Burning - if you have a campfire enthusiast amongst your Group Leaders, we're looking for adults to help run the 3 campfire evenings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. For further details please email amanda.mongan@eij.org.uk
What do you need to do?
  • Consider volunteering opportunities advertised daily in Subcamp Offices

Dining Out with Chubbys

Take a look at our online menu. Groups can pre-book their orders prior to arrival by emailing Chubbys.  During the event Groups can continue to book by email or in person at the Chubbys Restaurant.

What do you need to do?
  • Take a look at Chubby's menu

Media Sales

You and your participants will be able to purchase a variety of unforgettable memories from Media Sales in the Media Centre and also online throughout and after the event.

There will be a DVD that will capture the Jamboree for people to relive, share the adventure with their parents and also promote what your group got up to whilst at this year’s event.

Our photographers will be capturing photos of the participants and groups in action around the site. Groups and Participants can purchase photos throughout the event and, new for this event, and a first for Jamborees, will be digital photo sales. Take digital copies of the photos away on EIJ USB Sticks.

Don’t forget safety in your final preparations

Our aim is to have a safe and healthy Jamboree, we need everyone’s support to achieve this. Make sure you’ve read our Good Camping Guide and Handbook as they provide lots of useful information.

Gas
Please ensure you check your gas equipment and hoses before packing them so you know they are safe. Hoses need to be less than 5 years old and in good condition, with no splits or damage. Make sure they are securely connected with crimps or jubilee clips. Groups are allowed up to 100kg of gas on their site, but we recommend you keep this to a minimum as you can restock throughout the week (see Gas Sales above). Jamboree staff will complete some gas safety checks at the start of the event.

Fire Safety
Please ensure you bring a fire blanket and bucket for your mess tent. To reduce the risk of fire you are not allowed to bring items such as charcoal BBQs, pierceable gas canister stoves, hurricane/tilley lamps, candles, garden flares.

Food Safety
When menu planning carefully consider what items are on your menu to ensure you can safely prepare and cook these onsite.

  • Check gas equipment and hoses before packing them
  • Bring a Fire Blanket and bucket

  • Bring heavy duty black sacks for general waste
  • Bring white plastic sacks for food waste
  • Bring a container for collecting your glass items
  • Use the recycling bins

Don’t take home unused food, donate to Foodbank

What is it?  Foodbanks provide emergency food to people in crisis.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with Foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

In the UK there are 430 Foodbanks, in Essex alone there are currently nine, during 2015 there were over one million food parcels distributed, the Essex Foodbanks handed out in excess of 23,000, three-day food parcels.

EIJ2016 is about Our Changing World, you can help us help others by donating leftover food.
What do you need to do?
  • At the end of the Jamboree there will be an opportunity for you to leave any sealed long life food such as jars, tins, cereals, pasta, rice, biscuits, to name but a few.
  • There will be a collection point in each Subcamp Office.
  • The food collected will be distributed between the various Foodbanks within Essex.
