CNSC 2016 JULY NEWSLETTER
President's Message:
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.  Despite there being no snow on the ground there is a lot happening "behind the scenes" at the ski club.  In addition to some large grant applications and the creation of a new strategic plan, one of the key items has been the hiring of a new General Manager.    After the ski season concluded, Cara Moore, our current General Manager indicated she wouldn't be continuing in this role so she could focus on family.  As such we put out a posting for a new full-time General Manager in early May, and we were delighted to see a high number of applications for the position.  As a result, we are very pleased to announce that John Bowes will be starting as our new General Manager on August 2nd.  John is currently the President of the North Bay Nordic Club in Ontario, and has been integral in the running of the operations over the past few years (on a volunteer basis).   Previous to his time in North Bay, John and his wife Theresa (who is a family/ER physician) lived in Prince George for about 5 years and fell in love with our ski club.  During that time, John competed in the Iceman, and took his CANSI and Ski Patrol training.  With his background as a teacher, John also brought several of his classes out to Otway so his students could learn how to ski. John and Theresa also have 3 children, and look forward to having them grow up at the ski club.  On behalf of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, I would like to extend a warm welcome to John and his family to our wonderful community and club.  I look forward to working with John in continuing to make our ski club such an amazing place.

I would also like to thank Cara Moore for her work over the past year in running the club.  The past number of years have been a time of amazing growth and change at the club, and it's been great to have the support of all the staff to help facilitate the smooth operations of the club during this time.

Strategic Planning
Final Draft

The board of Directors is seeking input from the membership on the draft CNSC 2016 – 2020 Strategic Plan.  This plan comes as the result of several months of hard work which included a membership survey from which we received 270 responses and a one day planning  workshop attended by the board of directors, club members and representatives of the Prince George Cycling Club and the Prince George Road Runners Club.

We would like to hear from the membership on the draft Strategic Plan.  Please email your responses to manager@caledonianordic.com by July 15, 2016.

A familiar face will be missing from the Otway Office and Rental Shop this winter. Terra Young is heading off on a new life adventure and moving to southern BC. Not only was she a dedicated staff member in the office for many seasons, she was also a committed volunteer. For the 2015/16 season, she took on the large role of Track Attack coordinator and coach.

We wish her all the best and appreciate the skills and enthusiasm she has brought to CNSC.
TRAIL WORKS

If you have made any rounds on the ski trails in  the last month, perhaps you’ve noticed that there has been some construction happening.  Part of Tigger has been rebuilt and improved.  Pineflats trail has been leveled and extended, Fingers has had leveling and corners improved and has been reconfigured to create a longer more continuous trail. The downhill portion of Jr. National is now connected to Hickory Wing a few hundred meters above where Up the Creek enters.  Lynx has a new entry point onto Northern Lights.  A Para-Nordic trail has been established.  An adjustment has also been made to the sprint course.  Extensive leveling and corner adjustments have been made. Stumps have been removed along the trails to allow for wider grooming . Forty new signs have been ordered and will be installed before the ski season starts.

With all these changes a new map will be developed and posted at all the major junctions, which have been named by committee over the past winter.

The purpose of the trail modifications are:

  • To have more continuous trails to enhance skier experience
  • To help make grooming more continuous and eliminate backtracking
  • To assist skiers in following a trail from start to finish without having to deal with a multitude of junctions which require the interruption of tracks
  • To have more flowy corners and enable the groomers to set continuous tracks
  • To have more areas where skiers can single skate on level trails
  • To add excitement and flow to the two big downhills, Lynx and Jr. National
  • To have a ski trails independent entities going from a common junction
  • To have important junctions identified and recognizable for skiers understanding and safety, as well as being able to communicate locations among staff, and ski patrol.

Ken Hannah and Steve Cutts are to be congratulated on a job well done. This has been an ambitious plan which started last December and will culminate by the beginning of the ski season.  Let the ski season start early!  It will be exciting!

Thank you to the Trail Committee for all your input over the winter and thanks also to General Manager Cara Moore and the Board of Directors for supporting the improvements.

Summer use of single tracks:  Please travel in the proper directions.  Down tracks are down only and unsuitable for walking.  The down tracks were built by mountain bikers to eliminate colliding with uphill riders and walkers/runners.

If you are riding in busy times, trying to do personal bests on two way tracks is not advisable. Please ride cautiously on two-way tracks.

There has been some badly needed trail maintenance done by a small number of volunteers recently.  Thank you.  If you would like to help, please contact me and I will get things going.

Remember that this whole area is a no smoking area.  We really want to ensure that there is no possibility of a fire outbreak here.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Bears have been spotted numerous times on The Otway trail system.

Happy trails,

Ed Day

Director of Trails and Grooming

Otway Nordic Centre is a non-smoking facility, not only for health reasons, but also to protect our facility from fire. Please also refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages in the parking lot. Permits and licences are required for on-site alcohol consumption.
We are working on proper signage for the parking lot and lodge area to address these concerns.
CNSC Junior Racers and Biathletes worked hard and had fun at last weekend's volume camp here in Prince George. They cycled, ran, roller skied and paddled for summer dryland training.
