• Keep Calm and (Don't) Enable Macros: A New Threat Actor Against UAE Dissidents

  This report describes a campaign of targeted spyware attacks carried out by a sophisticated operator, which we call Stealth Falcon. The attacks have been conducted from 2012 until the present, against Emirati journalists, activists, and dissidents. Read the New York Times' coverage. • Access My Info now includes fitness trackers, dating applications

  Access My Info (AMI), a web tool used to submit disclosure requests to companies on the data they collect and share with third parties about their customers, has now been expanded to submit disclosure requests to fitness tracker companies and dating applications. • Ron Deibert's op-ed on Access My Info

  Citizen Lab Director Ron Deibert authored an op-ed for CBC News detailing the newly revamped Access My Info tool, which now includes fitness trackers and dating applications. He also weighed in on Part 2 of the 'Big Data' CBC Ideas Podcast series, titled "Big Data or Big Brother? Citizenship and Security in the Age of Big Data."
   

• Release of DIY Transparency Report Tool

  The Telecommunications Transparency Project announced the release of the DIY Transparency Report Tool, which is designed the help small and medium sized organizations produce holistic transparency reports. Such reports comprehensively explain to customers, citizens, and government agencies alike how an organization retains data, its policies for disclosing information to government agencies, and the regularity at which it does disclose information to such agencies.
   

• Christopher Parsons US proposal to collect social media information

  The United States Department of Homeland Security has filed a proposal to collect social media details from visitors to the country. Citizen Lab Postdoctoral Fellow Christopher Parsons commented on the privacy implications of the proposal, as well as broader trends in social media monitoring by officials.
