CDC and Zika Updates

The Female Health Company  (FHC) has been assisting Federal, State and Local governments with outreach, education and training as well as providing product to many at risk areas in Latin American and the US.

FHC recently announced several outreach programs:

2016 Summer Olympics:
  • The Ministry of Health in Brazil will distribute 100,000 FC2 Female Condoms to the athletes participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), a total of approximately 450,000 male and female condoms will be distributed to the Olympic athletes.  The Brazilian Ministry of Health already has an adequate supply of FC2 condoms to cover these needs from a prior tender.
FHC Donation:
  • FHC has donated FC2 Female Condoms to both the CDC Foundation and UNFPA, and is assisting with education and training initiatives.  The efforts with the CDC Foundation donation are specifically targeted at reaching women in Puerto Rico through the CDC Foundation in Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Department of Health. A training group is working to increase awareness as well as increasing availability of the product in retail throughout the island.
  • Kelli Rodriguez, Director of Sales for the Americas at FHC, attended a luncheon at the National Press Club to meet with the CDC and CDC Foundation members. She had a chance to speak with Dr. Frieden (pictured above). Dr. Frieden expressed appreciation of our donation to Puerto Rico, as well as our education and training support. There was also discussion of next steps in Zika prevention, and the need for additional kits and FC2's significant role in the overall effort. The luncheon was part of a "wake-up call" campaign highlighting the need for greater awareness, support and funding to fight the spread of the Zika virus (both from the private and public sectors), especially from members of Congress and key leaders.

FC2 Added to Zika Prevention Kits

FHC provides FC2 educational supplies and support to the Washington D.C. Department of Health (DC DOH).  On May 14, DC DOH distributed more than 1400 "Fight the Bite" kits to community members in the eight wards of the District of Columbia. The kits contained bug spray; mosquito dunks, and a male and female condom.  Dr. Anjali Talwalkar, Senior Deputy Director for the Department of Health Community Health Administration, stated “the primary concern of the Zika Virus in D.C. and everywhere is for pregnant women,” and added, “infection during pregnancy has been shown to cause birth defects.”

In addition to providing kits to community members, the DC DOH is also providing kits to ObGYNs in the District of Columbia. The next “Fight the Bite” community outreach event will be held on July 16th in all eight wards. FC2 provides women a non-hormonal dual protection option for prevention of unintended pregnancy and STIs, including the Zika virus and HIV/AIDS. The product is comparable in efficacy to that of male condoms in preventing both unintended pregnancy and STIs.
