Wellness/Access Fee

Beginning with the 2016 Fall semester, there will be an increase in tuition/fees, which is the addition of a wellness center access fee. The System Office has interpreted the tuition waiver policy to exclude fees. This was a decision made at the state level, and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) is implementing that change system wide.

Full-time and H35 Employees who are also Calhoun students are exempt from the access/wellness fee.  Please click here for the most recent published information.

We are pleased to announce that our own Marty Kellum, Decatur Mathematics Lab Instructor, has been selected to be part of The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College’s Project ACCCESS.  He was one of a handful of instructors selected to be part of the organization's 13th Cohort.

Way to go Marty!

About the AMATYC Project ACCCESS:

Fellows participating in the AMATYC Project ACCCESS will gain knowledge of the culture and mission of the two-year-college and its students, acquire familiarity with the scholarship of teaching, commit to continued growth in mathematics, and participate actively in professional societies.

Fellows will attend two consecutive AMATYC national meetings where they will participate in a program developed particularly for new faculty, as well as in regular conference activities. In the intervening year, Fellows are required to attend an AMATYC Affiliate meeting, MAA Section meeting, or NCTM Regional meeting near their home institution.

For the duration of the project, an electronic network will link ACCCESS Fellows with each other and with a group of distinguished mathematics educators. As an integral part of their professional development during the Fellowship year, Fellows are expected to develop, implement, and evaluate a project at their home institution. In addition to learning and networking opportunities, Fellows will receive one-year memberships in AMATYC for each year of their Fellowship.

The Support Personnel Advisory Board is excited to announce July’s Employee of the Month, Bobby White, Print Press Operator/Darkroom Technician. Over the years, Bobby has diligently worked to produce Calhoun’s print materials in a timely manner with a great deal of pride. He completes every job with the utmost care and precision.  He is always helpful, displays a hard work ethic, and is a true jewel in the crown of Calhoun’s culture of excellence.

As part of the College’s student success initiative provided by its affiliation with Achieving the Dream, Ernest Williams and Latosha Baldwin attended the Minority Male Community College Collaborative (M2C3) 2016 Working Group Meeting in San Diego, CA, June 9 – 10.

According to Williams “The purpose of attending this conference was to see if information could be gained to assist in Calhoun’s efforts to abridge the inequity gaps of enrollment and retention of minority students.  The conference focused on facilitating discussions on institutional capacity building and the development of strategic plans that advance success for men of color in community colleges.”

Some of the best practices that Williams and Baldwin identified during the conference include the following:
  • Create forums to allow minority students to engage in meaningful discussions relative to their goals, objectives and needs. “Simply have students at the table.”
  • Collect and analyze data on the issue of student’s perspective of the college. Decide on how to use this data in a way that benefits the college and the student body.
  • Help educate the faculty and staff on certain stereotypes and discriminatory practices that may be commonplace but unacceptable.  How to become an Equity-Minded Practitioner?
  • How to impact the entire college? Allow the effort to be administrative driven with involvement from across the board.
  • College President, Vice-President and other Administrators to attend the conference
  • Solicit and value faculty, staff and student input.
  • For faculty: be intrusive with students, ask demanding questions, be intentional, be willing to spend extra time with a student who needs, or you may feel, needs help. Be encouraging.
Williams and Baldwin were impressed by the work Portland Community College (PCC) is doing; inspired by M2C3, PCC has started an African American Men Scholar Program. After analyzing data that indicated low retention rates for African American men students, Portland Community College enacted a program on its Cascade Campus to help offset those numbers.  “The African American Men's Scholar Project seeks to escalate persistence and college completion, improve transfer rates, and increase degree attainment for African American men.,” said Williams. “This program provides individual and small group academic guidance/coaching to 10 Mentor Scholars throughout the academic year. Those Scholars benefit by receiving mentoring from African American male professionals in the PCC and Portland community.  Additionally, each of the 10 Mentor Scholars will mentor three first year African American students.”

Benefits to the participating scholars include:
  1. Structured periodic meeting with Program Advisor
  2. 1-on-1 Academic Advising
  3. Community Service and Networking Opportunities
  4. Leadership, financial management, and professional development workshops
  5. Upon completion of their degree program, the Mentor Scholars will receive a scholarship to the transfer college of their choice.
“Calhoun hosted M2C3s Drs. Luke Wood and Frank Harris last April and will be working with them to administer some assessments and surveys during the summer and fall semesters,” said Chuck Holbrok, Calhoun’s ATD Co-Chair.

If you are interested in becoming more involved with any of the College’s student success initiatives, contact either of our ATD Co-Chairs, Chuck Holbrook 256-306-2737 or Latosha Baldwin at 256-713-4821.
