To celebrate the launch of BHM 2016 and his new album Nonagram, award winning alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch takes to the stage. A journey through the hidden world of abstraction, Nonagram draws inspiration from the incorporeal ideas of mathematics, through shifting time signatures, harmony and tonality that explores how music gives form to ideas that can’t be seen in the natural world. With a list of accolades and awards including a Mercury Prize nomination, two Urban Music Awards and two MOBO awards for Best Jazz Act, Soweto Kinch is a tour de force of the contemporary British Jazz and Hip Hop scenes. More news on the rest of the BHM programme to come soon!
'Funmi Adewole joins the team!
My name is ‘Funmi Adewole and I am delighted to be the project researcher for Lost Legends: 30 years of Black History Month in Leicester. The telling of stories has always been part of my working life. I started as a journalist and moved into the performing arts, touring with physical theatre and African dance-drama productions. One of the reasons I gained an M.A in Postcolonial Studies is my fascination with the role that arts and culture plays in personal and social transformation. I have been a researcher amongst other things on two Heritage projects to date, always a fulfilling experience. Serendipity’s passion for arts and artists shines through in the design of the project, which will celebrate Lost Legends, artists, and advocates which made many a Black History Month memorable but whose contribution to changing the national culture is in danger of being forgotten.  Please contact me with stories about your Black History Month experiences. The exhibition will be only part of the project. There will also be a website and an archive into which collections will be deposited.  Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. P.S Did you know Laurel Aitkens, the Godfather of Ska lived in Leicester?

Lost Legends Call  Out
Saturday 1 October
12:00pm - 3:00pm
Newark Houses Museum

In 2017 Serendipity will mark the 30 years of Black History Month with an exciting new project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund: Lost Legends. The project aims to celebrate and record the contributions of Leicester’s African and African Caribbean community to the cultural heritage of the UK over the last three decades. This call out event is an opportunity to contribute your memories and stories to the project. What events have you participated in during Black History Month, which still bring a smile to your face? What are the political or cultural issues that inspired a Black History Event you organised? Have you seen any life changing performances? Are there any forgotten local artists or advocates you wish to remind us about? Come and record sound bites and video clips at the Call Out. Please bring along any posters, brochures, leaflets, photographs and other memorabilia you might have from previous Black History Month celebrations. You are welcome to donate items or we can make copies. The project will culminate in 2017 with in an exhibition and a website with your contributions being archived. Lost Legends is an opportunity to collectively create a legacy that will celebrate 30 years of uplifting activity in Leicester.
If you are interested in participating in the project or would like further information please call 0116 257 7316 or email info@serendipity-uk.com.
