South Africa is the continent's crown jewel. A firm favourite, it really does have it all from stunning landscapes to vibrant cities, world-class wine and wildlife as well as that indomitable, adventurous African spirit. No longer seen as just a safari hotspot, the country is as colourful as it is wild and as diverse as it is unique. It's no exaggeration to say that South Africa is a whole world within one country.

Who should go? Everyone. From couples looking for an incredible journey to honeymooners after a
trip-of-a-lifetime or families in search of adventure, South Africa has an experience for all.

Why go now? Aside from being an incredible, must-visit destination, other currencies are particularly strong against the Rand right now, making it an extremely affordable long haul option.

South Africa’s game viewing is world-class. Kruger National Park is renowned for good reason, with its promise of spotting lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, while the lesser-known Madikwe Game Reserve is a sweeping savannah roamed by the same Big Five as well as the endangered African wild dog. For those that don’t want to stray far from Cape Town, and have the family in tow, the malaria-free Eastern Cape, home to incredible wildlife, is an ideal choice.

If you’re a seasoned safari hand, try something extraordinary, such as a once in a lifetime wildlife encounter in South Africa. Adrenalin junkies can choose between crocodile cage diving in Oudtshoorn and a great white shark encounter off the coast of Gansbaai, home to the largest population of great whites in the world. Then there’s the sardine run, a natural phenomenon whereby billions of sardinops sagax migrate to the KwaZulu-Natal coast, forming a shoal that stretches for 15km – dive beneath the waves to come face-to-face with this extraordinary sight.

It’s not all about wildlife in South Africa – the gourmet scene is thriving too. South Africa’s foodie mecca, Cape Town, has gastronomy as diverse as its people, with cuisine blending influences from its pre- and post-colonial past, served in the finest restaurants. When it comes to wine, those in the know make for the Winelands along the Western Cape, where lush hillsides covered in vines make for an idyllic setting for wine-tasting. There are 18 official wine routes here, stopping at historic estates that are home to exquisite wines and impressive art collections.

Nothing beats the freedom of a self-drive trip, giving you the flexibility to explore South Africa your way. Hit the road for an overland adventure that could be exploring the coastal plains of the Garden Route, the verdant pastures of the Winelands or even driving yourself to game reserves. Those seeking adventure should also consider cycling for a scenic tour through South Africa’s picturesque landscapes, or even joining world-class surfers on the renowned breaks.

We’re big fans of multi-country holidays, and believe a safari in South Africa combines superbly with an Indian Ocean escape. Start with an exciting wildlife adventure, exploring the bush and tracking the Big Five on game drives and bush walks. Then, swap your khakis for kaftans as you hot-foot it to the blissful beaches of the Indian Ocean. We recommend twinning South Africa with a beach retreat in Mozambique, the Seychelles or Mauritius, for barefoot luxury.

Taking the whole tribe on safari is an adventure of a lifetime. Whether you have little ones or teens in tow, seeing the Big Five together is a very special experience. South Africa, with its malaria-free game reserves, is an ideal destination. Madikwe Game Reserve and Eastern Cape have fantastic family-friendly camps and lodges that cater to kids with an array of activities, from cake baking to face painting, bug collecting to ‘dung safaris’. By taking over a whole camp or safari lodge you'll have the space to ensure your adventure is perfectly tailored to your family’s needs.

Incorporate one of South Africa’s great cities into your trip, or even head over for a long weekend city break. There’s no better way to get a taste of South African culture, be it a dose of Apartheid history in Johannesburg, discovering the art scene in Cape Town (the Terracotta Army and first emperor of China is currently on exhibition around South Africa) or hitting up Durban for world-class surfing and rugby matches – it’s also the place for swimming with whale sharks.
