Summertime and mindful living is easy...

Well, that's sort of what the song says and really it should be, shouldn't it? But with Brexit, financial troubles, school holidays, the terrible weather and all the political uncertainty not to mention our crazy minds - it might not be that way for all of us this summer.

But, the good news is that WELLBEING IS A SKILL - yip i'm shouting that! And science backs this claim up! Check out this informative article from mindful.org -  I summarise it here.

There are four scientific aspects to wellbeing which can help us navigate and negotiate whatever political, economic or personal upheaval we may face this summer :)

1. Resilience

When something bad happens, how long does it take you to recover? Some people rebound more quickly than others, and neuroscientists are measuring that recovery time.

People who report greater purpose in life may recover better than others because this purpose could help them “reframe stressful situations more productively,” according to this studyOther research suggests mental training could help people rebound more quickly as well. New research at the Healthy Minds lab asks whether the neural circuits involved in resilience can be altered by mindfulness meditation. The preliminary data suggests it would take thousands of hours:

“From the data that we have, it’s going to take a while before resilience is actually impacted. It’s at about six or seven thousand hours of practice, cumulatively, that we begin to see modulations of resilience. So it’s not something that is going to happen quickly, but this is a motivation and an inspiration to keep practicing.”

Recently I've had many emails from people asking about becoming a mindfulness teacher and whilst I'm really supportive of enthusiasm and we do need more teachers I think the message needs to be that it TAKES TIME and just like the practice itself it doesn't happen overnight... In my own case it's about 6 or 7 years of practice before I started sharing in small groups then, teaching and gradually running my own business... (I've been teaching for 9 years now). In one case a lady had been asked by her boss to start teaching staff... she didn't even have her own personal practice... Her boss thought she could just to a course then teach. Mindfulness is not like other courses.... it's more like learning to play the cello - its takes lots of practice! Be patient and keep practising and then you will just be a teacher without needing to try! If you do really want to become a mindfulness teacher please have a read of UK best practice guidelines for mindfulness teachers.

2. Outlook

Do you see the good in everyone? Outlook is the ability to savor positive experience—from enjoying a coffee break at work to seeing kindness in every person.

Research suggests “modest doses” of loving-kindness and compassion meditation can impact outlook—a recent study where individuals who had never meditated before received 30 minutes of compassion training over two weeks. “Not only did we see changes in the brain but these changes in the brain actually predicted pro-social behavior,”

Check out my monthly self-compassion workshops at Maitri to get you started.

3. Attention

“A wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” says, an article published by a group of social psychologists at Harvard. Those researchers also found that almost half the time, we’re not actually paying attention to the present moment.

What if we could “turn down the distractibility” by 5%? It would impact productivity, being present and showing up for others.

William James in 1890, wrote: “the faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention over and over again is the very root of judgment, character, and will” he went on to say that an education which improved this faculty would be the education par excellence. “but it is easier to define this ideal than to give practical directions for bringing it about.” If William James had more contact with the contemplative traditions he would have instantaneously seen mindfulness as a vehicle for educating attention.

Please consider my Namaste class or MBSR to learn how to meditate.

4. Generosity

“When individuals engage in generous and altruistic behaviour, they actually activate circuits in the brain that are key to fostering well-being. And these circuits get activated in a way that shows more enduring activation than other kinds of positive incentives.” says World-renowned neuroscientist Richie Davidson.

Caring for others is a “double positive whammy”—to quote the Healthy Minds website—because you benefit from being generous to other people. A recent study  suggests compassion training can alter your own response to suffering.

Extending kindness—to oneself and to others—is a simple but powerful expression of mindfulness.

Through training our brains in mindfulness and compassion practices we enable these four fundamental constituents of wellbeing to be strengthened and increased.

Book of the month
Later this month I'll be doing some further training in Mindful Self Compassion with Kristen Neff and Bangor University with the view to teach 8-week Mindful Self Compassion courses - so I'm currently reading this! :)

Talk of the month
I love this TED talk from Andy Puddicombe. It's only 10 minutes and it's a great basic introduction to the practice of mindfulness. Although resilience and lasting change takes 1000s of hours of practice, 10 minutes, practiced regularly can make a HUGE difference :)

Quote of the month
Daily on my social media channels (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter) I post a quote or pic to inspire your day.  Recently the most popular (by likes and shares) was this one from the wonderful Rumi.

"Your task is not to seek for love, but to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."

Plum Village
Check out the photo album from the 2016 Vulture Peak Gathering I attended in Plum Village in June. If the album is too much I posted just 'one pic' per day on the Immeasurable Minds Instagram account. #Instagood

The photo above is from the Jardin du Boissonna - the most amazing rose garden close to the New Hamlet, Plum Village - a must visit if your planning a trip. Wonderful mindfulness teacher, Trisha Lyne from West Cork and I spent a very sunny day there enjoying rose tea and scones with rose jam :)

Monthly Mindful Self Compassion
I'm teaching two mindful self compassion workshops this month. The first on the 10 July is in Bray, Co.Wicklow in a wonderful community collective Common Grounds. To book your place please email them directly on commongroundbray@gmail.com

In a change to previously advertised date the MSC workshop at Maitri this month will be Sunday 24 July 10.30-12.30. If your away on holiday you can always catch he workshop again on 28 August and 18 September.

Each workshop is standalone and suitable for everyone. Come along and learn how to build your residence and wellbeing.
Corporate and Personal training...
Wee reminder that I offer 1-1 mindfulness for people who feel too shy to come to a class...

I also offer mindfulness and other wellbeing training for organisations. It's really varied and interesting work for example this past month I did a workshops for TESCO NI Managers, for the Chief Executive's Forum in the Guildhall, Derry and I spoke at conference for the organisation 'The Northern Ireland Degree in Social Work'.  In July I will be leading a 3-day retreat for people from the City University of New York and doing my final session for Combat Stress.  I have been running workshops for guys with PTSD for a year now. In Autumn I'll be leading retreats for a local Health Trust and leading workshops for NIENetworks and the Royal Victoria Hospital's A&E staff as well as more workshops for TESCO. See a list of all the organisations I've worked for and some examples of he types of things I can offer here.

If your organisation is serious about wellbeing and would like to help people manage stress and reduce absenteeism please get in touch on mindfulmind@outlook.com
Namaste Wonderful Moment class
There are 3 sessions left in the current 6-week session at Namaste Thursday 7 and 28 July and Thursday 4 August. If you have previously completed this course or an MBSR with me you are welcome to drop-in (£8).

A new 6-week sessions starts on Thursday 25 August. Book here.
August-October Namaste #mindfulness practice class.

The above picture is a photo of a beautiful card made for me by one of the Namaste students Denise McDowell, Denise runs a small business making these cards and 'boxes' check her out here. I especially love it as she has made it so personal including all my accoutrements... bell, books, flower, candle and Andy the puppy I bring with me to class... if you don't know about him you need to come to the class :)

Denise attended the class at Namaste with her twin sister Moya. Moya is a visual artist she painted me the picture shown above the corporate and personal training section here. How amazing is that? And so generous and unexpected, I'm always amazed at the wonderful people who attend my classes. The piece is entitled 'mindfulness' - she does commissions - check her out here.
8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
My MBSR class just finished last tuesday.  The course is quite expensive at £330 put people still give me presents and cards at the end of it... I know they do this because of the transformation that has been brought about in their lives.  Here is one example from Wendy who gave me beautiful oil burner (pictured above) and wrote this in her card:

"A few years ago, whilst on holiday I bought myself a little plaque, it reads:

PEACE
It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work
It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm.

Until now, the plaques has been living in a drawer, as much as I wanted to I could not feel this way.  Today, it is out the drawer and on display!
Thank you Bridgeen
Wendy xo"

See more testimonials here. If you would like to talk to me about whether the MBSR is right for you please get in touch: mindfulmind@outlook.com or click here for more info.
