PMDAlliance - Your Hub of Information

Time and time again we've heard you ask for resources as you struggle to navigate the 6+ websites offering services for people with PD.  Parkinson disease and other movement disorders are hard enough to manage without also having to spend time toggling between websites.

Consistent with our vision to act as a hub of information and reduce the amount of time you spend researching, our website offers lists of support groups, exercise programs, and now, movement disorder specialists and certified elder law attorneys.  With one click you can see services and providers in your area.  Visit our website www.PMDAlliance.org and click on Support, Exercise. and Wellness to explore the lists.

PMDAlliance was started because we saw tremendous unmet needs for people with PD, care partners and people with other movement disorders. Based on your input, we've carefully designed our services. Blending research with innovation and capturing the best that technology has to offer, our goal is to address your unmet needs, no matter where you live!  As the only statewide organization with staff on the ground serving you, we're partnering with you, right now - every day.

Get involved.  Be a part of our community.  Live fully!

HELP US SERVE YOU BETTER!
Currently you're receiving every email we send out, regardless of where you live. We now have the capacity to sort our mailings by address/zipcode, but we don't have that information yet.

Please partner with us to serve you better by updating your subscriber profile.  Our goal is to have all subscribers updated by September.

Why does it matter?
  • Address and zip code information assists us with program planning.
  • Many grants require that we capture where the people we serve live.  Adding this information is essential for program sustainability.
  • The ability to map service needs assists us with resource allocation, outreach and educational activities.

New Research Indicates Impaired Decision Making May Be Linked To Motor Issues

Judy Talley, MA Gerontology
Program Director, PMDAlliance

People impacted by Parkinson's or other movement disorders often comment that cognitive changes present their own set of challenges. These changes can have a disproportionate impact on quality of life for everyone who must cope with them.  That's why we discuss various non-motor symptoms, including cognitive changes, at all of our conferences and in our newsletters. If there's a particular topic you'd like to hear more about, please write us at info@PMDAlliance.org or call us at 800.256-0966. We'll work with our physician partners to generate an article addressing your interest.

This month, UCLA announced results from research tied to cognitive changes. UCLA researchers discovered that people with Parkinson’s disease have a form of impaired decision-making that may be a major contributor to the movement problems that characterize the disease. The finding suggests that the neurological factors underlying Parkinson’s, which currently affect nearly 1 million people in the United States, may be more complex than commonly believed. The study also could pave the way for strategies to detect Parkinson’s earlier in its course.

MOVE IT!  Join a Parkinson's Based Exercise Club!

PMDAlliance's Move It!™exercise clubs provide group-based exercise for people with PD who ,in underserved communities, may be homebound, or are part-time residents.  Club members will access a Parkinson's based exercise class three times per week and also have the opportunity to participate in a facilitated discussion group after class once per week.

Unlike exercising to a DVD, which lacks community engagement, socialization or feedback and relies entirely on self-motivation, our Move It!™clubs offer active, real-time exercise using internet technology. People with PD interact with each other, develop a sense of community and participate in an exercise program that is specific to their needs.

SPECIAL FREE OPPORTUNITY FOR PD SCREENING

Dr. David Shprecher & Dr. MJ Liu

As with other diseases, Parkinson’s disease (PD) early detection and management has a positive impact on quality of life and may prolong survival.  PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disorders. It is defined as a progressive neurologic condition that can cause motor and non-motor symptoms, including tremor, sleep disorders, rigidity, balance issues, swallowing problems, constipation, loss of smell and more.

Banner Research Institute is offering free screenings this month for people who have not been diagnosed with PD and may have risk factors for the disease.  The free PD screening will include a brief questionnaire and observation and brief consultation by a board certified movement disorder neurologist.

We are still learning what the risk factors are for PD.  What we do know is that these factors contribute to being at risk for PD:

Advancing age - Although there is the occasional case of the disease developing in a young adult, it generally manifests itself in the later years of life. The risk continues to increase with advancing age.
Gender - Males are more likely to get Parkinson's than females. However,  due to declining estrogen levels, post-menopausal women who do not use hormone replacement therapy are at greater risk. as are those who have had hysterectomies.
Family history - Having one or more close relatives with the disease slightly increases the likelihood that you will get it.
Environmental Exposure - Exposure to an environmental toxin such as a pesticide or herbicide puts you at greater risk (farm work). Some of these toxins inhibit dopamine production and promote free radical damage.
Head Trauma - Recent research points to a link between damage to the head, neck, or upper cervical spine and Parkinson's.

FREE Parkinson’s disease screening will take place on July 29th,2016 from 1 – 4 PM at Banner Sun Health Research Institute.  10515 W. Santa Fe Drive.  Sun City, AZ 85351.  You must register and secure an appointment.  To secure an appointment, call 623-832-3248
