Summer Fun!

If you know anything about libraries, you know that they plan all year for the kids’ summer reading programs. Libraries encourage reading by making it fun! The goal, of course, is to prevent that summer backslide on reading skills.

Adults don’t have to worry about that backslide, but summer is a great time to get caught up on the classics or that bestseller you just haven’t got around to read yet. The staff at the Stowe Free Library has put together a comprehensive adult summer reading list with titles such as “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and “Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania” by Erik Larson. There are bestseller titles like “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins and “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, as well as staff favorites like “The Art of Hearing Heartbeats” by Jan-Phillip Sendker and “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. The 2016 Adult Summer Reading List is available in the library at the front desk. Come check it out!

Whether you are young or not so young, the Stowe Free Library has a variety of titles and programs available for your enjoyment. Stay cool this summer and keep reading!

Wishing you a fun-filled summer,

Cindy Weber, SFL Director

Over 100 Vermont public and academic libraries will be handing out passports in the second annual Passport to Vermont Libraries program, encouraging patrons to visit some of Vermont’s unique, beautiful and creative libraries. Three patrons statewide (adult, young adult, child) will receive Vermont Library Ambassador awards for visiting the most libraries. The Vermont Library Association is an educational organization working to develop, promote, and improve library and information services and librarianship in the state of Vermont.
Thanks to everyone who attended our Ice Cream Social.

Museum passes are a free or reduced admission.  Passes are checked out to adults only for a two-day loan and are first come first serve.  Each logo is clickable to find out more about each attraction.

Our Summer Reading Program is here for children of all ages- please stop by the library and sign up!

  • Come to the library and pick up a bookbag containing a reading record, a bookmark, stickers, a door hanger, and a copy of the Good Sport Gazette.
  • Fill out a reading record on your own. Set a goal for yourself --how much do you want to read over the summer? When you reach your goal, you can come to the library for a prize.
  • You can also play the Library Reading Incentive game or join our Bedtime Math program for additional prizes.
  • Middle grade readers (gr. 4-8) can also join our Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Club. Here’s how it works - get a punch card of DCF titles. When you read a DCF book, a librarian will punch your card. Fill out a raffle ticket each time you get a punch on your card. You could win a free DCF book! Come to our book discussions this summer too!
  • Kids in grades K-4 can join our Red Clover Program. Get a punchcard, read all the Red Clover books, and win a free ice cream cone!
  •  Children not yet reading on their own can have a caregiver read to them. Fill up a reading chart with stickers and earn a prize too.

Children do better in school when they read over the summer. Come to the library and we will help you find great books to read!
