The Experts’ Edge

The Toronto Varsity Blues shares their Women’s Hockey Selection Criteria, which are close to most collegiate programs in the U.S.

They write:

In selecting athletes as members of the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team, the coaching staff considers the information listed below through observational and written evaluations.

The goal of the selection process is to select a team that can train and compete at a high performance level on a daily basis and compete with the best teams in Canada. Team formation requires elite level performance, team cohesiveness and a constant pursuit of excellence.

The sport of hockey is not a measured or timed event. In the selection of athletes to compete together as a team, decisions cannot be based solely upon objective criteria. Considerations factored into the selection process include:
  • Physical attributes: Speed, strength, agility, conditioning.
  • Skills: Effectiveness and efficiency in skating, passing, stick handling, shooting, etc.
  • Needs of team: Positional needs and positional suitability, short term/immediate vs long term/future program needs.
  • Feasibility of contributing to goals of team: Ability to physically and mentally perform at level to compete nationally.
  • Commitment: Demonstrate commitment to high performance sport in general and to the varsity program overall.
  • Unconditional Effort: Demonstrate focused effort is not conditional on environment or those around you.
  • Potential for Development: Demonstrates awareness of what it takes to succeed even though skills are not fully developed yet.
  • Teamwork: Willingness to accept a role that leads to team success and a great team ambassador.
  • Winning Attitude: Demonstrates the "will to win", the desire to compete during training & competition.
  • Shared Purpose: Contributes to the team atmosphere with a shared purpose of creating a successful team.
  • Good Attitude and Respectful Behavior: Treats others with respect, supports program, team, the Faculty and the University of Toronto. Makes choices that reflect a high performance lifestyle both on and off the ice.
  • Progressive Improvement: Positive changes in physical testing, technique and strategic awareness.
  • Effective Communication: Demonstrates good communication skills and interactions and willing to work through and resolve conflicts that might interfere with the success of the team.
  • Versatility: Exhibits a balance between offensive and defensive skills as well as the ability to play different positions with different players on the ice.
  • Maturity: Exhibits an ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity, and reacting appropriately. Accepts responsibility and is accountable for actions and learning. Takes initiative and is self-directed.
  • Attendance at training: Makes training/competition a priority when scheduling classes and activities.
  • Other intangible considerations that affect the dynamics and performance of the team: Contributions to the team environment and ability to be a leader and team ambassador will be assessed.
EVALUATION GRID
5 = Excellent elite-level: Meets national standards of performance & has a lasting and dominant impact.
4 = Above average: Meets provincial standards of performance but average nationally & can definitely perform at the national level.
3 = Average: Average standard of performance provincially. Inconsistent performance but has potential to perform at national level.
2 = Below Average: Standards of performance below provincial average and deficiencies in many areas. Some potential but limited.
1 = Unacceptable: Not approaching level of contribution required or expected. Significant, blatant deficiencies in all areas.

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey staff believes that considering the mix of selection criteria listed above, which includes subjective as well as objective measures in evaluation of performance ability, will result in selection of the best athletes to work together as an effective team and contribute to team success. Although all criteria will be considered not all criteria are weighted the same when assessing what is needed to achieve the goals of the programs. The coaching staff, and ultimately the head coach, is responsible for making all athlete selections.

Expectations of University of Toronto Hockey Players
  • Make choices that demonstrate that you are a responsible, accountable and serious student-athlete.
  • Demonstrate a relentless commitment to effort.
  • Arrive for training and competition mentally ready to extend your limits at every opportunity.
  • Demonstrate ability to let go of mistakes to give the next opportunity the greatest chance for success.
  • Always be on time…make it a habit to wait for others BUT never have others wait for you.

Ask WWFHA

In this week’s edition of ‘Ask WWFHA’ we focus on the 10U and 8U teams.

Where will the Washington Wild 10U and 8U teams play?
The 10U team will play in the MHL 10U/squirt division, and a team volunteer will schedule exhibition and tournament games against all girl teams. The 8U team will play in the MHL 8U/Mite division, and a volunteer will work to schedule all-girl games. The competition in the MHL consists of co-ed and/or all boys’ teams from other local associations.

How will games be structured for the 10U and 8U teams?
USA Hockey mandates cross-ice games for 8U and will soon mandate ½ ice for 10U for further development of the age group. The MHL has proactively chosen to implement ½ ice games this year.  WWFHA has requested authorization of Highland’s small ice for 10U games (played full-ice), and 8U games (played ¾ of the ice) from the MHL, thus matching SnoKing’s already approved us of their small rink in Renton.

How are the 10U and 8U teams set up? How does Dual-Rostering/Registering work?
10U and 8U players have three options to participate on a team:
  • Full-time player
  • Dual-rostered/registered player
  • Tournament player only
  1. Full-time player
    • A player who plays only for the Washington Wild
    • Participates in 2 practices per week, plus league, exhibition and tournament games
    • Pays full WWFHA dues and full team costs
  2. Dual-roster/registered player
    • A player who selects WWFHA as her ‘home’ association; thus all Washington Wild team activities take precedence. Otherwise known as: Full-time player.
      • Participates in 2 practices per week, plus league, exhibition and tournament games
      • Pays full WWFHA dues and full team costs
    • A player who selects another association as her ‘home’ association; thus all those activities take precedence. Otherwise known as: Dual-roster/registered player.
      • Participates in 1 practice per week and league games, plus exhibition and tournament games as available
      • Pays reduced WWFHA dues and similar team costs
  3. Tournament player
    • A player who attends at least but no more than 1 practice per month and attends tournaments
    • Participates in 1 practice per month plus tournament games
    • Pays partial WWFHA dues and reduced team costs
What do WWFHA Dues cover and what do the team costs cover?
WWFHA Dues cover practice ice, game ice, referee fees, league fees and general operating costs. Pay WWFHA dues in one lump sum, or over five months (September – January). This year, all Dues payments will be online (either auto-debit or billed/invoiced).

Team costs cover coach travel expenses, tournament fees, extra practice ice, exhibition game and referee costs, and team decided extras (decided as a group – such as a team party). Pay team costs in one lump sum or monthly throughout the season (September – March).

The costs for each team is posted in the Team ‘costs’ page.

When are the 10U and 8U practices and where?
We await the final ice schedule from the arenas for all teams; however, we expect the 10U team to practice Monday and Friday nights at Highland Ice Arena and the 8U team to practice on Fridays and Sundays. The final schedule will be published as soon as it is available.

Do the 10U and 8U teams have access to the Pro-Staff like the other teams, including Engineered Sports?
Yes. Each team may schedule time with WWFHA Pro-Staffers, or they may listen to them speak at a special event. Each Pro-Staffer is also available outside the organization.

Engineered Sports (ES) is currently designing the off-ice Washington Wild team-specific pre-practice and pre-game warm up and workout regime. ES will train the already knowledgeable coaches in their specific techniques and will periodically check in with the coaches. Teams or individuals can also book time with Engineered Sports outside of Wild activities.

How can we learn more?
To learn more join us for the evaluation skate / placement skate. There is no commitment and you can register for the association / team afterwards if you wish. Simultaneously, parents can connect with us and ask WWFHA personnel to ask questions.

Check out each team’s section on the website, which includes a team page, team overview, key benefits, coaching bios, practice info (coming soon), conditioning, team apparel (new NIKE vendor coming this season), and tryout information.
